"Mine have not yeilded a drink"

I've been working on mine, following the directions diligently, but have only gotten sugar-water. I've gone through all the trouble shooting suggestions I've found online and with forums, too. Maybe I got a batch that just won't yield? At any rate, I was sad it hasn't been working for me. Response from CFH: We are so sorry to hear this! We are always happy to assist you so we can get the grains to do their job for you. Please contact us anytime directly!

    "So easy and delicious."

The directions and video instructions are easy to follow. I love making the cream soda version of water kefir. It is so refreshing.

    - Ruth

    "They are growing!!!"

I'm really happy about the outcome of the water kefir grains. I do a second fermentation using organic apple juice and it's just delicious and refreshing. Family and friends are enjoying it. Thank you. Very happy with my purchase.

    - Maria

"Not at all what i had imagined."

I have not had them long (followed all directions to a T) but all I am getting is really sugary water. I have tried adding juices to get a fizzy drink in a second "ferment"...but no luck. Hoping this changes soon - or this will have been a rather expensive, time-consuming waste. Response from CFH: Thank you for reaching out, and for continuing to work with Water Kefir Grains! We hope by now from our behind-the-scenes troubleshooting you are having success, so please contact us if you need further assistance!

    "A fun, healthy drink"

This is our first go at a homemade health drink. It turns out to be easy and fun. Lots of possibilities on flavoring, and so far, tastes great! Do appreciate the helpful info on site!

"So Delicious and the Staff is Excellent"

This is my second box of water kefir starter. My first box did great until it kinda didn't any more. After a lot of help from the super-excellent chat support team, I decided that I had probably not followed the instructions exactly as I should have and decided to just start over. This second batch is even more delicious than the first (probably because I'm doing a better job of taking care of it!). So fizzy! So tasty! This is great kefir and if you have ANY ISSUES at all, do not hesitate to chat with the team. They are wonderful!

Easy to read instructions, includes everything you need to get started except the Mason jar. I LoOoVe it!!

    - Leigh

    "Wonderful!"

Instructions are very clear and I'm already on my fifth batch. The fizziness is a little hard to achieve, but I guess it depends on the recipe. Our peach flavor is not at fizzy, but the lemon/ginger was more bubbly.

    - Debi

    "Very pleased"

Started my first batch of water kefir. Made a bottle of mixed berry 'soda' from it. Have made several different flavors since. Also have used in a recipe for fermented cucumber pickles. I will not be buying or making sweet pickles with vinegar again. Very pleased with the product and looking forward to trying more recipes using water kefir.

    "Very easy!"

I've been making kombucha tea for over a year and just started with water kefir. It is easy and super tasty!

    "Not good"

Followed all the instructions but it never worked. Tried adding 1/2 cup then going back to origanal 1 cup but just milk with curds. Very very disappointed. Response from CFH: Thanks for working with us behind the scenes! We do hope you can update us soon with the progress of the grains. Be sure to contact as soon as there is an issue, so we can assist!

    "VERY GOOD"

Hello, first time with kefir followed directions and I have all I want for my family , works as advertised and is very good we love the smoothies and so do my 2 labs . cant wait to try other types

    - Hillary

"As they say, no where close to "Nailed it" :("

Thought this one was going to work out...the 1 and 1 1/2 cup milk turned out good...then as instructions state added another 1/2 cup of milk. This is when everything fell apart. I restarted but did not increase - just stayed at 2 cups...fail, tried again with 2 cups - failed. All I get is old milk with some curdles in it. So, thought I would decrease milk - went back to 1 1/2 cups milk (which had worked previously) - failed again. How can I have killed these things when EVERYONE says how forgiving they are? What sin did I do that these little Milk Kefir Grains won't forgive? Here I was worried about what I was going to do with all the wonderful smoothies I was going to make. Totally bummed. Response from CFH: Thank you for working with us behind the review scenes! We are happy we could fine tune things, and hopefully things are back on track for you and your grains. Please contact us if needed!

    "hopeful solution"

I bought the milk kefir grains after going much research into how I could repair my gut after a serious illness and 6 weeks of IV antibiotic therapy.. all the reviews said kefir was the answer and I sure hope so.. after my first batch--I've seen improvement..so far so good...intend to make this an ongoing part of my nutritional regimen. will take some time to get the hang of how it works as this is totally new to me.. Response from CFH: We are happy the grains are working well for you, and you are finding some benefits. Everyone is different, and we hope you will be able to find continuing benefits!

    "Healthy, Versatile, and Cost-Saving"

Our local grocer does not stock Organic Nonfat kefir, so I started making CFH's powder version. I soon figured out that the grains were a significantly cheaper way to go for the long term. Also, one does not need to boil the milk in preparation for grain-based kefir. The boiling process was a bother, because the milk inevitably burns on the bottom of the pan. That cleanup task was my least favorite kitchen chore. Two tips: 1. Get a quality plastic strainer (kefir grains can react with metal and they are slightly smaller than quinoa or coarse-ground pepper, so you can lose them with some conventional plastic strainers). 2. Make sure you have at least 3 wide-mouth quart jars on hand (or something large enough to fit your hand inside to scrub off the sticky substrate). We don't have a dishwasher, so maybe this is only an issue for hand dishwashers. We use kefir as the dairy base for our smoothies, as an addition to cereal, and as a substitute for anything that calls for sour cream. Be aware that heat with destroy kefir's probiotic qualities, but not the lovely tart taste.

    - kathan

    "Excellent!"

They work beautifully. Today is my 7th day and they thickened up just like they were supposed to. Takes a bit of time to get used to the smaller grains than the years ago product, but once they work - its AOK! Thanks again.

    "Works great!"

I was a little bit concerned about ordering this. But, it turned out to be simple enough that it worked well for me and had no problem getting the Kefir Grains started. The first batch took almost 2 days, but we keep the heat down in our house so it really wasn't up to the optimum temperature. However, it has worked well and we have made 4 batches so far with excellent results. We found the instructions very easy to follow and very happy with the overall product. We did research the milk we purchased to verify pasteurization and antibiotic free cows and feed. This is a great product and we would, and already have, recommended it to others.

    - John

"The kefir I recently bought will be given to my brother. So, I cannot give a review right now."

It should be great! The recent order that I made will be a gift to my brother. Thank you!

"I'm very satisfied with the Kefir grains. I"

They were activated very easily and I am making about 4 cups a day. I do need to learn how to slow them down or use more in my cooking. Response from CFH: Here's an article on how to slow them down! https://www.culturesforhealth.com/learn/milk-kefir/make-smaller-batches-less-milk-kefir/

    - Pam

    "One Year Later....."

One year later and wow! They are still going strong. I have to consistently feed grains to my pup in order to keep production at a quart a day (Coat Looks Awesome! and she begs for it :)) . Warmer months are more productive than cooler months. I wasn't sure at first with the flavor, but after a few months, I learned what I like and what that looks like in the jar. It has done amazing things for my health and immunity! Amazing, and life changing. So yeah...it's worth it.

    - Steven

    "Happy with the product."

The kefir grains worked just great, and taste great! However, I wish I had purchased just the grains, and not the kit. The temperature strip was not helpful (to me at least), and the strainer is so small that it takes forever to strain the kefir. I now use a fine strainer that I already had, and that works great. The cheesecloth was useful, and if I decide to try to make cheese, I think it will help. But, all in all, the grains are what I needed. I would order them again if I ever need to.

    - Judy

    "Eew"

I wasn't prepared for the final result. I've had a lot of kefir in my day. I love the sour taste. I followed the directions to a T. However all I got was rancid tasting kefir. I even tried the double fermentation how to. This was supposed to make it more palatable. It wasn't. I was very disappointed. Response from CFH: We are terribly sorry to hear this. Our efforts to reach you for troubleshooting the last two weeks were unsuccessful. Please contact us in the future and we'd be happy to help you!

    "GREAT PRODUCT!"

I was looking for a way to make kefir with raw cow milk and I tried various ways before but I often ended with an off taste that my kids didn't like. With this product, the taste is perfect and the consistency amazing, the cream rise on top and it a just irresistible...even my kids ask for more.

    - anne-flo

    "Somewhat variable results"

I have had some difficulty getting a proper tasting kefir from this starter as opposed to the Cultures for Health kefir starter, which has worked flawlessly as a rule in the past. First 4-5 batches tasted more like an extremely mild, almost tasteless runny-type yogurt even though I followed instructions to a t. Experimented with the last batch: left it at room temperature (it is about 65 in my house or lower most of the time) and tighten the lid. After approximately 18 hours it finally tasted like kefir and was lightly effervescent the way it is supposed to be. Response from Cultures For Health: Although in general milk kefir needs 72-75ºF to work, they are live cultures and subject to change/adapt, so good for you for manipulating variables to get it to your liking! Please don't hesitate to contact us if you need assistance.

    - Nita

    "I love this product"

Originally I purchased this product because it had a wider variety of bacteria and yeast plus more packets per box. I understood that I would only get up to 7 uses out of it, but the grains were too much for me to keep up with. Even using raw milk, I have been able to keep one packet going (with great results) through well over 7 uses and the taste is wonderful!

    - AngelSarver

    "Body Ecology Kefir Starter"

Great product. Tastes great, good texture and I can re-culture 7 times.

    - Jessieann

"Normally like the Body Ecology Starter, but had a bad experience recently."

I have used both water kefir grains and Body Ecology Starter. I actually like both. I have found the starter to be quick and convenient at times that I was not using the grains or did not have the time. I like the starter with coconut water, and think it tastes great. I use raw coconut water from Whole Foods, usually one that comes frozen, and it have made many batches and always liked it. Recently I bought two boxes of the starter, and the power was brown/rust color. I made it with the coconut water and it tasted terrible, so I threw it away. I tried another packet from the box, and experienced the same think as I did with the previous batch. The power in the packets of both boxes felt hard. I have experienced the packets hard before, but was told by Body Ecology that the power should be white or beige, and the carrier sometimes causes it to be hard if refrigerated. I went back to the water kefir grains, and they are doing very well, so am enjoying them currently.

    - Evelin

"The best strainer for milk kefir I have used!"

For the first eight months of making milk kefir(store bought whole milk), I used my high quality large stainless strainer. Tiny, tiny grains would get trapped in the fine mesh and were impossible to wash out. I finally gave in and order this 3.5" strainer. The straining process is actually much faster and thorough! I use a canning funnel to support the strainer over the canning jar. With a couple of gentle taps, the thickened kefir goes right thru and the grains stay put. A few tiny, tiny grains work their way to the underside from the tapping, but a gentle scrap with a spatula retrieves them. There are no seams; there are no hiding spots for stray grains or any other foreign debris. It cleans up easily too. After months of thinking it would be a dumb purchase, I bought it and for six months I have absolutely loved it!

    - Debbie

"A note about the large size"

This is a good strainer. However, I wanted to point out that the larger size does not fit over a standard quart jar. That may be obvious if you bother to measure a jar, but I missed that detail. I was thinking I'd go for the larger size to have a greater value and accommodate more grains, but instead I wish it could fit perfectly with the quart jars I use for kefir. Maybe this tip will help someone else choose the best size for their purpose. Response from CFH: Thank you for your feedback! What we find works great (we love this larger strainer too) is to use a funnel that the strainer can sit upon it. We use a wide mouth funnel, and it's perfect! Good luck!

    - Anna

    "Perfect! "

What can I say? This is the perfect little high-quality plastic strainer! It's ideal for straining out kefir grains while making kefir water and is just the right size and works perfectly with the bottles and a funnel. I haven't had any problems with wear and expect it to last for years. In fact, I have now purchased it in both sizes and would happily buy another if only I could convince my sister to begin making ferments! I love this company! :)

    - Rebecca

    "Small and strong"

This small strainer cleans up easily and works so well. I am very pleased.

    "Completely satisfied!"

This was my first set of Grolsch bottles and after reading tons of negative reviews of those sold by other venders I was skeptical to say the least. I wanted to wait until the completion of my first 2F with these bottles before reviewing them in order to give a completely honest review. The glass as well as the wire is very thick and resilient, definitely of excellent quality. The seals are what I was most concerned with prior to purchase and they exceeded my expectations! My Kombucha came out perfectly carbonated, allowing me to achieve my sought after goal of a good brew. I am very much grateful, so much so that I just placed an order for another 36 bottles! Thank you so much CFH! Islam. Namaste.

    "very hard to close"

Lots of trouble to close these bottles. I hate them. Perhaps we'll get used to it. First batch of water kefir was well carbonated and very tasty. Response from CFH: Hi Elizabeth! Yes, the new bottles are indeed a bit difficult to close. They will get better as time goes on, but you really do want them to hold in those gasses and not let air in!

    - Elizabeth

    "Great value "

    Very nice solid bottles.

    - TD

    "Really nice!"

These bottles are working very well. Didn't think I needed a case but that was an error in my thinking. Love the dark color and the weight. Very durable. Nice to be able to store the water kefir in these. Will be playing with the secondary fermentation soon. Right now just enjoying the Lemon flavored water kefir.

    - lin

    "Great bottles!"

I am using these for water kefir and they are great. Very tough! They seem very durable and well-made. It was a bit of a learning experience to put them together, but not too hard after the first couple. They are stiff to close at first, but that's because they are so sturdy. Recommend!

"Not like I had expected. "

The hairs on the brush have split to one side; one side of the wire down the middle has bristles on it and the other side has none. it doesn't clean like I thought it would. Not very happy with it at all. Response from CFH: We are so sorry to hear this! We will be contacting you soon, but please reach out to us anytime you are unhappy with one of our products - we'd be happy to assist!

    - Loraine

    "Not as expected"

So I was excited to get this bottle brush, but was also disappointed at its HUGE size! LOL! My husband solved the problem by crimping the end of the wire and now it fits into the brown bottles I purchased for cleaning. Just be careful when you pull it out cause it sprays soapy water everywhere!

    - Brenda

    "Bottle Brush"

Brush does not fit in the brown bottles I purchased from Cultures for Health. Disappointing because I haven’t found a brush that fits in the small neck of these bottles & therefore; do not use the bottles, either, not having a way to be sure they are clean. Response from CFH: I am sorry this brush does not fit - it is rather large, and works well with the brewing equipment on the site for beer, wine and cider. However, I have tried and true way to really clean the bottles, although with daily use you can just wash with warm soapy water and rinse them well with warm water. If you have stubborn debris, add about 1-2 Tablespoons of uncooked rice in the bottle. Then add a tiny bit of soap (not anti-bacterial) and 1/4 to 1/2 cup water. Cap the bottle and shake vigorously for several minutes. It may have to be done a few times if you haven't washed them recently. Empty the bottle, adding more water if necessary to ease the rice grains out. Rinse well with warm water and it should be good to go!

    - Theresa

    "Wow"

Wow because I can't believe I am writing a review of a bottle brush that cost $2. And wow because I can't believe how good this thing works. It fits easily into narrow bottles and big bottles equally well. The long handle makes it easy to maneuver to ensure a good clean. Yes the handle came folded in the box as everyone says but it's wire and you can just bend it back into place--no big deal. My old bottle brush was double this price and more solid..to the point where I had to shove it into the bottle tops if I was lucky to fit it. This brush is great. So yes, I highly recommend this product.

    - M

    "Good"

Exactly what I was looking for. I used it to clean recycled kombucha bottles as well as bottles with a tight neck and it works very well. As other reviewers said, it came folded but I was expecting that and it hasnt affected its purpose.

    - Verdin

    "questionable"

hi guys, everything I have ever ordered from cultures for health has been a five star satisfaction except for this product. it arrived folded in half (I'm guessing to make shipping it easier) and when I unfolded it the bristles started falling out where it was previously bent... which opened up a space for bristles to continue to fall out... I ended up throwing it away after the first use. Response from CFH: We are so sorry, Alex! It sounds as if the brush was definitely defective if the bristles were falling out. We'd be happy to replace or refund, and we have sent you an email!

I haven't yet had a chance to use this product in my kefir water, but because I filter all of our drinking water and my son has what I believe may be mineral-related issues with constipation, I have added it to our drinking water a couple of times. Interestingly, he has immediately gone to the bathroom afterwards! I believe this will be just as good for kefir grains & other ferments as it is for the human body! I'm very happy with this company generally and this is a great product.

    "Saved my kefir grains"

These mineral drops helped save my kefir grains! I was having problems with my grains deteriorating and creating foul-smelling water kefir (I use carbon-filtered drinking water). I went through the recommended procedures for cleaning and resting sick kefir grains, including adding these drops, and brought my grains back from the brink. Now I use these drops with every batch and my grains are healthy and big. Best of all, no more rotten-smelling kefir!

    "Great product with many benefits."

Water kefir grains appear to thrive when product is added to the water & produce better batches of beverage. Also seems to produce more action in first few days veggie ferments. Have also started adding to drinking water of family & pets. I highly recommend this product for those who need to increase mineral intake or having trouble with water kefir grains.

    "ConcenTrace mineral drops"

When I first tried to activate a batch of water kefir it didn't work. In my next order I decided to try it since the first one failed without it. I use filtered water which at the time I didn't realize REMOVES a lot of the necessary and essential minerals! This time and every time since I have used the Drops. They work like magic. I even started adding the Drops to all my drinking water and even my pets' water. The drops kept the Kefir healthy and growing beyond belief. If I didn't see it with my own eyes I wouldn't have believed it.! It also improved the taste of the water.

    "Very dissatisfied"

I used this thermometer for the first time last week and it was off by over 20 degrees! Not happy with the product at all. Note from CFH: Thermometers will require calibration before the first use and periodically throughout the life of the thermometer. I use it for making yogurt, and feta cheese. I use it to be sure my hand feeding formula is the right temperature for baby parrots. Easy to read and very reliable.

    "Happy with this"

This is my very first gadget as far as kitchen thermometers are concerned , happy I got a good one. Easy to use , reliable, clear readings.

    "Good quality"

I ordered this thermometer because I had a coupon. This is my first digital thermometer. I like it because it is waterproof. I use it to make yogurt and kefir. In the past, I have bought Taylor brand standard thermometers and found them to be good quality. I'm expecting this one to hold up well also.

    "Tiny!"

I ordered the basic thermometer, but it turned out to be a mini thermometer. Very tiny and dials are hard to read! Response from CFH: The details section note this thermometer has a 1-inch dial display and is 5 inches long.

    "Basic it is"

There is nothing fancy, just a "Basic Thermometer." If you don't need accuracy or long reach it will do a fine job.

    - Chugchug

"Easier than what I was using."

When I decided to make my own yogurt, I was using a candy thermometer -- something I already had. This is much easier to position and read.

    - BuckIrose

    "Neutral"

The thermometer works but disagrees with my other thermometers. I have two others that show to add starter at a lower temperature. I don't know which is most accurate. Also, the round top dial is very small and hard to read. Response from CFH: Thermometers can be calibrated. Please contact Customer Support for advice or for replacements for defective products.

    "So easy to use"

I live in California so I dont use the heat much in the winter. Instead of heating the house I put these on some large canning jars with my mix in them and put them in a cabinet. I also got a cheap heating pad and set it next to the jars. This keeps the jars warm enough for the critters and now I know how the temp is. I was afraid the heating pad would be to hot.

    "stick on thermometer"

My downstairs kitchen is not heated so these little stick on thermometers have come in handy. I now know that just turning the light on inside my oven raises the temp. to 88 F. so after a short time, it is best to move my heirloom yogurt to top of the stove and just cover with a towel to hold in the warmth.

    "Very handy! "

Perfect little helper and easy for my seven year-old to use when he helps make batches of our "soda." Unfortunately, I lost my first one and had to replace it, but fortunately it's very inexpensive. Very handy!

    "Good for yogurt!"

I used this to strain yogurt for making labneh and frozen yogurt. It works well. It will shrink if you accidentally put it in the dryer. :) Even so, I got the 12x15, which shrank to about 10x12, and is still more than big enough for my needs (I strain about a pint at a time)

    "very useful product"

Good Quality organic cotton bag, well sewn. I got the 12 x 15" bag and use it for straining Greek yogurt primarily but find other uses as well. It stands up to the boiling for sanitation and is cheaper than a Greek yogurt maker.

    - Tennessee Tim

    "Great for straining yogurt"

I got this bag to strain my yogurt. It works great. I can hang it by the drawstring and in an hour or so I have have delicious greek yogurt.

    "Don't seem to fit "

I ordered these so I'd have extras on hand if I need them, but so far they haven't fit any of my bottles because the wires are too long for them to close properly.

    "Excellent Product...High Quality"

Rec'd my bottle tops today and am very pleased with them. I just feel better having an extra bag of these around when the time comes to replace a top when I'm bottling my water kefir and kombucha. These work great and are a high quality product. Highly recommend!
