Tips & Tricks

  • General Safety: Although melt and pour soap usually doesn’t stay hot for long, we still recommend that you exercise caution when working with it. Make sure you have a designated work space, free from distractions. Monitor children when working together on a project.
  • Food Safety: We recommend designating bowls and utensils solely for soap making to avoid future contact with food.
  • Essential Oil Safety: Always dilute essential oils. The instructions above ensure the essential oils are diluted, but if you decide to use any essential oils beyond homemade soap, be sure that you are diluting them appropriately. Always check with a health care professional before using if you are pregnant or nursing. You can omit the essential oil if needed. See More: Essential Oil Safety Guidelines.

Melt and pour soap is a very straightforward process compared to cold process soap. The only tricky part is making sure you mix all the ingredients before the melted soap re-hardens.

It helps to have your work space prepared already before you melt the soap. This means setting the soap mold in the place you want it to cool and prepping any colorants and botanicals before you melt your soap.

Whether you decide to melt your soap bases in the microwave or a double boiler is completely up to you. (Check out our tutorial on How to Make and Use a Double Boiler for tips).

We recommend melting the soap in bursts in the microwave to avoid over heating the soap. How long it takes to melt will depend on the strength of your microwave. From our tests, we've been able to melt a half block of soap base (8 oz.) in about 1 minute 30 seconds.

We've found that it can take up to an hour for a double boiler to melt soap bases, so if you do decide to use this, expect the project to take a bit longer.

Since the soap bases contain glycerin, you may notice bubbles forming in the melted soap as you stir and pour it. We don’t mind this, and think it gives the soap a bit character, plus it's supposed to be lathered anyways!

However, if you do prefer a more refined, smooth looking finish, put some rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle and spritz the bubbles as they form. The alcohol will release the surface tension and pop the bubbles.

Soap will take longer to set and harden in warmer temperatures, if it’s warm or humid in your house, be sure to let the soap sit for at least 12 hours before removing from the soap mold.

Botanicals in soap darken naturally over time. Keep this in mind when gifting your soap.

To avoid brown soap, we recommend only adding a few botanicals to start. Be sure to use or gift your soap with botanicals immediately after making to help it maintain its floral elegance.

Once you have a handle on your first batch of melt and pour soap you can get creative with round 2! Try switching up the layers and pouring the shea butter soap layer first, followed by the layer with botanicals and the honey base.

We hope this kit will help inspire more melt and pour soap fun in the future. There are nearly endless possibilities of what you can create.
