Water kefir grains create a carbonated lacto-fermented beverage from sugar water, fruit juice, or coconut water. Incredibly easy to use, the starter culture can create a new batch of water kefir every 24-48 hours. Water kefir makes a fantastic non-dairy alternative to milk kefir and can be flavored to make a range of delicious beverages, or as an ingredient in many recipes. Your family will love it!

Why I Love This Product

I like this product simply because it makes my kids giddy to see carbonation and fizz. When too much pressure builds up, the kids are excited to open bottles and see the water kefir explode out of the bottle, as well as where the flip tops land! But better than that, I am thrilled to know they are getting probiotic benefits when they enjoy a glass of water kefir. We like ours to be as fizzy as possible, so we leave it on the counter until we are ready to drink it. Since we prefer our drinks cold, we solve the issue of room-temperature water kefir by pouring it over frozen blueberries… just using ice would eventually dilute the water kefir, but blueberries make for a delicious treat at the bottom of the glass! Jerri, Customer Support Representative

    • Hi. I am on a no added sugar diet. Would kefir comply with this since in the fermentation process the sugar is consumed? Thanks
    • We cannot speculate on whether or not a particular cultured food fits into a certain diet, as there are too many variables at play when making home cultured foods. However, in general, the longer you culture any food, including water kefir, the less sugar or no sugar remains. You can use a tool called a refractometer if you need to actually measure the sugar content.

    • How many carbs does an 8 oz glass of water kefir contain?
    • I'm sorry, there is no way to accurately measure the different nutritional components in our products, as they are not standardized and each home kitchen keeper is going to have different processes etc. to get their end product. The exact amount of any specific nutrient will vary greatly depending on length of time culturing, product being cultured, temperature, and dozens of other variables.

    • I'd never made Kefir and would like to try coconut kefir. Do I just need store bought Coconut water? What kind of container do I need? Thanks so much. Audrey
    • The grains need to be rehydrated in sugar water and must go back into sugar water to refresh but they will make delicious coconut water kefir with either fresh or boxed coconut water. Try to find a brand that is the most natural to avoid exposing the grains to harmful additives. Glass canning jars work very well for making water kefir.

    • I noticed you say your Water Kefir is described as gluten-free, but I also see it's processed in a facility that also processes wheat. Can you describe how you ensure that the water kefir is gluten-free? Do you test the gluten content? I am very interested in this product but I get very ill from very small amounts of gluten. Thanks.
    • We are required by law to state that we produce our cultures in a facility that also processes other allergens. Our water kefir grains are grown with water and sugar only, in a building with kombucha and milk kefir. They are kept in a separate room. Our sourdoughs are in a completely different facility. Strict sanitation practices are observed at all times with our supplies, equipment, and staff.

    • Can you switch the feed from sugar to molasses after initial startup?
    • Molasses is not the appropriate food for water kefir grains and would be too hard on the grains. Stick with cane sugar and add up to 1/2 teaspoon of molasses per 1/4 cup cane sugar, but only if mineral supplementation is necessary.

    • Although the grains will survive with the nutrients and minerals in the Sucanat, occasional use of the drops would act as a welcome mineral boost for the grains.     • How about alkaline water (Kangen)? It's processed through a machine but I'm not sure what that entails. Thanks.
    • Water that has been treated to alkalinize it or to change its structure is not suitable for culturing. Culturing involves a precise interaction of bacteria and the food being cultured. If water is part of that culturing process, the natural structure and balance of the water should not be altered. If your water treatment unit has a setting for "clean water" that does not change the pH and does not alter the water structure, but merely filters out contaminants, then the water can be used for culturing.

    • How do these work with fluoridated city water? The filter on our refrigerator is broken, so all we use right now is tap water. I know it is chlorinated and fluoridated.
    • Fluoridated water will not work with cultured foods and is likely to harm the kefir grains. Unfortunately, fluoride is fairly difficult to remove from water even with a standard refrigerator filter. If your tap water is treated with chlorine and fluoride, it is best to purchase water. A store brand spring water sold in the gallon jugs is usually an acceptable solution. This is a new beverage for me to make and I chose to try this because I needed to get more liquid in my body thus improving my health. I am totally satisfied with the results I've had in making water kefir without having done a second fermentation. I find my batches have enough bubbles for my taste. I use Rapadura or Sucanat with purified water when I make this drink. The amount of grains doubled fairly soon so I make 2 batches each time I brew it.

I am new to making kefir of any sort. Thought I would try my hand at making water kefir first. So glad I did! The grains are good quality and I've been successfully making water kefir now for three weeks! My water kefir comes out bubbly and wonderful. My grains are healthy and doing well. The how-to videos on this site are very informative. I recently had a question and chatted online with a customer service rep, they were super helpful and it felt great being able to lean on their knowledge, since I'm a newbie.

so far so good. we are enjoying the water kefir. got off to a slow start because my house is cold, but the culture seems to be thriving now.

im a bit disappointed in the 'kit' as i already have strainers, and really bought it for what i thought was a booklet of recipes but was just basic instructions and one or two very basic recipes. many, better recipes are available on various blogs and web searches, so the kit is a waste of money IMO.

the actual grains are working out nicely even though they sat at the post office a few days, and endured a very cold oregon spring.

So much fun! I haven't tried it plain but LOVE the 2nd ferment.. I've tried cream soda made with vanilla flavor.. Cherry/lemonaid using frozen cherries and the juice of 1/2 a lemon... another made with tart cherry concentrate and lemon..and Lemon/Ginger! I have been making 8 cup batches and was able to share and get others hooked as well! My grand kids love it!

All my kids love the kefir water. They call it soda pop and drink whatever I make within one day. The instructions were easy to follow and I have made several times over and can do it in my sleep. My families favorite flavor is the vanilla. It tastes like cream soda and it is so easy to do.

We've been enjoying kefir off and on for nearly ten years with grains we've sourced for free locally and through the mail. I finally decided to buy grains and I do not regret it.

Though they do not seem to be multiplying after several weeks, they are otherwise doing quite well and we are very happy with the fizzy finished product after a second fermentation.

Everyone in the family loves to drink the water kefir and my 3- and 7-year olds beg for more!

We made water kefir for the first time two weeks ago and everything turned out great. The directions are very clear on every step that you need to do and are very easy to follow. Our family didn't take very well to milk kefir and I wanted a healthy drink alternative to commercial sodas and fruit drinks. Water kefir fits the bill. It is so easy to make and is easy to flavor. Our family of six goes through about 1.5 gallons a week. The kids love coming up with new flavors and whether it should be spritzy or not. I will definitely buy any fermenting starters or supplies from Cultures for Health in the future.

we tried making kombucha but my husband didn't really like it. i bought some grape water kefir ($6 per bottle!!) and he liked it. So, here we are. We just started with water kefir and we are experimenting with different juices and second ferments. That's what makes it so good. Also, To make it a bit fizzy, make sure that your second bottle is as close to full as possible, with a bit of room at the top.
If you notice that it 'upsets your stomach' back off a bit and increase slowly.
