Milk kefir grains are live active cultures consisting of yeast and bacteria existing in a symbiotic relationship. Adding the kefir grains to fresh milk yields a delicous probiotic drink in about 24 hours. Milk kefir can be enjoyed plain, flavored, or used in many recipes, like salad dressing, bread, and ice cream.

  • Rehydration period of 3-7 days required before regular use.
  • Reusable culture; makes up to 1 quart of kefir with every batch
  • Cultures on the counter at 68°-85°F
  • Suitable for use with cow or goat milk.
  • Grains require rehydration in pasteurized dairy milk. Once rehydrated, grains may be transitioned to raw milk.
  • May be used to culture coconut, soy, or rice milk once rehydrated in dairy milk; grains require regular refreshing in dairy milk.
  • Nut and seed milks yield inconsistent results.

Why I Love This Product

Making milk kefir is easy, simple, and fruitful... when you have good kefir grains. I have been making milk kefir for our family for years and have sourced kefir grains both from Cultures for Health and from friends who had gotten them from a friend who had gotten them from a friend. The Cultures for Health milk kefir grains have worked wonderfully every time... as long as I took proper care of them. At one point I was unable to get my grains to multiply or grow in size, but soon discovered that our kitchen was much too cold for them to thrive. With some changes, the grains became active and began to multiply with fervor. If it weren't for my own forgetfulness, I believe these grains could last a lifetime. • Hello! I wanted to know if it's okay to use real silver spoons (not stainless steel) with the kefir. If not, I suppose wood would be okay?

      Thank you!
    • Silver has anti-microbial properties and shouldn't be used with your grains. Stainless steel is fine but when in doubt, go with the wooden spoons :)

    • I want to make my own keifer at home but my family doesn't consume enough to make a new batch ever 24-24 hour. We usually go through 1 qt a week.

What do you do with the grains in between batchs?
    • In between batches you can add your kefir grains to a cup of milk and set them in the refrigerator. They will be good for about 2 weeks that way!

    • Oh no! I was rehydrating my kefir grains and accidently used a metal spoon. Have I ruined them? They have not started making proper kefir yet, and I am not sure what they are supposed to be doing at this point in the process. Can you tell me how sensitive they are to this sort of mistake?
      Thanks
    • The grains are probably ok, especially if the spoon is stainless steel. Brief contact with the metal will likely not harm them. Continue with the rehydration process and contact customer service if you have further problems.

    • Can you use this kefir starter set with coconut milk instead of cow's milk?
    • Yes however the grains must be rehydrated using dairy milk. After rehydration, you can put them into coconut milk. The grains will survive and culture coconut milk but they do not seem to grow well in coconut milk so plan to put them back into dairy milk occasionally, especially if you want your grains to grow and multiply.

    • Can you make kefir with instant non-fat dry milk? Thank you
    • You could probably culture a batch of instant non-fat dry milk with kefir grains, but the grains would not survive well as the dry milk is usually very highly processed and does not provide a lot of nutrient for the grains to grow and reproduce.

    • Does this kefir have lactose in it once it's made? I know the kefir I buy at the store says it's 99% lactose free, and I didn't know if that was all kefir or just theirs. Thanks,
      Amina
    • The amount of lactose in the finished kefir will depend on how long you culture it. The longer it cultures, the less lactose will be in it.

    • Hi,

I am new to making my own milk kefir.

I can only find ultra-pasteurized organic milk in the grocery stores here. Is that ok?

Can kefir be made from fat-free milk or is that not advisable?

      Thanks,
      B
    • Ultrapasteurized milk can be too sterile for the kefir grains. They may be able to make kefir for a while, but eventually they are likely to weaken for lack of nourishment. You may be able to have your grocery store order some regular pasteurized milk for you. Fat-free milk is acceptable, but will make a thinner kefir.

Within 3 days of the grains arriving, I had amazing kefir by the quart. The included instructions and videos on the site are invaluable. You just have to really try to mess this process up. I like to let it go longer occasionally as the curds & whey are amazing too. Such a versatile product. I never dreamed you could do this with homogenized/pasteurized milk. Thank you CulturesForHealth!!!

a great product with exceptional support staff. this culture is pretty forgiving so just use some common sense and go for it. if you feel like you're becoming a slave to it just throw it in the fridge for a bit then pick up where you left off later. also, i've had great results w/ ultra pasteurized milk as this is the only kind i can find in my area. cheers and thanks to CfH for a great product and support.

Noe from CFH: Ultra Pasteurized is not recommended as it may not culture consistently. Contact customer support for help choosing ingredients for culturing.

My kefir grains "awakened" without a hitch and are now producing kefir beautifully! I am enjoying trying different ingredients in "second ferments" and making kefir smoothies with various ingredients. I called with questions on one occasion, and your rep gave me much valuable information. With all the written and video helps you provide, I don't see how you can go wrong! Yes, the initial price is costly, but it will pay for itself in no time as you can continue culturing indefinitely if you like. You can make up to a quart of kefir daily if you choose. Highly recommended product and service.

I started drinking kefir over a year ago and was pleased with the difference it made for me. Then my local store stopped stocking it, which was the ultimate blessing in disguise. After researching online, I ordered the kit from Cultures for Health (I love your website!). I Received the kit and started reactivating the grains the first night: no results in the first 24 hours, but ever since I have been culturing all the kefir I can use and I am loving it. It has become a staple in my diet AND my cooking, and I couldn't be happier!!!

I am completely satisfied with my milk kefir starter kit. Was a little worried when I saw the small amount of kefir grains but there was no need to worry as it worked wonderfully. I was able to work up to 4cups quickly. I have since been able to switch over to raw goat milk with no problems and now consistently make kefir every day for my husband and I. Thank you for a wonderful product.

I'm new to fermentation and really appreciate the videos and the great customer service. My first 2 attempts weren't very good but after a couple of emails I got the results I was looking for. I've been able to transition over to raw goats milk and my next batch I will try and flavor. I'm very happy with the product and the company.

I was amazed at how fast I received my kefir starter kit after I ordered it. Once it arrived, I got started with the re-hydration and reactivation process. My next shock was that on the second day of the process I found that I had a thick, creamy, and very mild kefir waiting for me. I have been enjoying the stuff ever since. I can't recommend this product enough. It is so much better than any store bought that I have ever tried.
Now I am ordering the Bulgarian yogurt starter. We will see where that goes..

We sincerely wanted to make this product work - but everything from the ordering (accidentally ordered 2 sets when I only wanted 1) to implementing was unclear and turned out to be a huge waste of money and time. Review by Dawn

The directions provided were very unclear (i.e.; check every 24 hours - check for what? I'm brand new at this! I can look at it often up to 24 hours - or every hour, but you don't detail what it is I'm looking for! I haven't a clue). I tried calling for help to no avail - lines were always closed when I was trying to get help. We really want this to work for us. But have NO idea how to get to this point with the undetailed and unclear directions provided. Your directions may be perfect for someone who has made their own kefir before. I've only had kefir once in my life and have never made it. Please read your instructions as if you are the novice that I am - and see how the instructions do not meet the needs of a newbie. By the way - I have kept everything - as your instructions say to do - I haven't a clue as to what to do with the stuff!

In summary, I'm very disappointed and out a fair amount of money (with the organic milk and the raw milk - products that I don't normally use or buy and the 2 packages of grains) and a lot of time and energy. Not all of your customers are experienced in making kefir. You need to provide much, much more instruction - detailed instruction and help available when it is needed.

Response from CFH: We are happy to help troubleshoot products and clarify instructions. We are available directly 6 days a week via Live Chat, phones, and email.

Mild, thick kefir with the right milk Review by Anne from Garner
Price
Value

My first week of kefir making did not go well. I had bought a store brand organic milk, since the first week the kefir pretty much wakes up and starts producing, and I did not want to waste expensive milk for this process. After the second day in the store brand milk, my kefir started making an extremely foamy, yeasty brew, that tasted like alcohol. I tried fixing this overgrowth of yeast any way I could think of without success. I was about to throw away the kefir grains. I had run out of the cheaper organic milk, and just to keep the kefir until the next day, I added my usual drinking milk, a brand name organic whole milk from pasture raised cows. The next morning I had perfect mild wonderful kefir ! The store brand milk obviously caused this yeast overgrowth, so if you run into this problem, change milk brand.
I have a glass of this kefir every morning now. It tastes wonderful. Mild, and so thick, I could use it like a yogurt.

Note from CFH The yogurt texture can be a little stressful for small grains. We normally recommend culturing to a "thickened-milk" texture, more like buttermilk to ensure that the new grains are getting plenty of fresh food (milk). Great job on the change in milk, it can certainly make a difference and don't forget to try a second fermentation on your finished milk kefir. You'll find instructions here: http://www.culturesforhealth.com/second-fermentation-milk-kefir

I purchased this product several weeks ago.I really did not want to spend this much , however, given that I drink 2x/day or more, I figured, it would be an investment. However, I had poor results. I contacted the online support for advice. They were very helpful in providing strategies for success. Unfortunately, I still do not have homemade kefir.

Response from CFH: Please contact Customer Support if you have any problems with your cultures. Some cultures require a few adjustments to work properly.

This product shipped fast and was everything it said it was going to be. Quality product. My grains were alive and kicking right away. Only problem is I'm now making too much kefir. I am so much more aware of the milk now (ultra high pasteurized v. pasteurized). I accidentally used ultra high pasteurized, however, and my kefir turned out just fine. I was worried I was going to kill it. Pretty tough grains. Highly recommend this to anyone spending upwards of $5 kefir at the store.
