Our Milk Kefir Starter Kit includes:

Milk kefir grains are live active cultures consisting of yeast and bacteria existing in a symbiotic relationship. Adding the kefir grains to fresh milk yields a probiotic drink within 24 to 48 hours. This dairy kefir culture is reusable and, with care, will allow you to make kefir over and over again.

  • Traditional heirloom-style kefir culture (a.k.a. "grains" due to appearance); not a powdered starter culture
  • Reusable culture; makes a new batch of kefir every 18 to 48 hours
  • With proper care, the culture can be used indefinitely to create delicious probiotic-rich kefir
  • Cultures on the counter at 67° to 80°F; no heating appliance required

Milk kefir grains are a starter culture that can be used with soy or coconut milk if care is taken to occasionally revitalize them in dairy milk. (Complete instructions will be included with each order.) Coconut kefir in particular is quite thick, rich, and delicious. Click here for information on making coconut kefir.

There are numerous uses for kefir including making a type of cream cheese, adding to smoothies, and drinking alone. Kefir can also be flavored after it has cultured and the kefir grains have been removed. Click here for more information on the numerous strains of bacteria and yeast generally known to comprise milk kefir grains.

Milk Kefir Grains Ingredients: Organic whole milk, live active cultures. Packaged with a small amount of organic powdered milk to extend shelf life.

Milk kefir grains are produced in a facility that also processes soy, wheat, nut, and fish products.

Shipping Information: Our milk kefir grains are shipped in a dehydrated state in a barrier-sealed packet. Upon receipt, the dairy grains can be rehydrated in fresh milk (this process usually takes 5 to 7 days) then used to make kefir by adding the grains to fresh milk, stirring, covering, and leaving at room temperature until the desired consistency is reached (no more than 48 hours).

Complete instructions are included with each order. Click here to view our kefir instructions.

Why I Love This Product

Making milk kefir is easy, simple, and fruitful... when you have good kefir grains. I have been making milk kefir for our family for years and have sourced kefir grains both from Cultures for Health and from friends who had gotten them from a friend who had gotten them from a friend. The Cultures for Health milk kefir grains have worked wonderfully every time... as long as I took proper care of them. At one point I was unable to get my grains to multiply or grow in size, but soon discovered that our kitchen was much too cold for them to thrive. With some changes, the grains became active and began to multiply with fervor. If it weren't for my own forgetfulness, I believe these grains could last a lifetime. • Hi,

I am new to making my own milk kefir.

I can only find ultra-pasteurized organic milk in the grocery stores here. Is that ok?

Can kefir be made from fat-free milk or is that not advisable?

      Thanks,
      B
    • Ultrapasteurized milk can be too sterile for the kefir grains. They may be able to make kefir for a while, but eventually they are likely to weaken for lack of nourishment. You may be able to have your grocery store order some regular pasteurized milk for you. Fat-free milk is acceptable, but will make a thinner kefir.

    • Does this kefir have lactose in it once it's made? I know the kefir I buy at the store says it's 99% lactose free, and I didn't know if that was all kefir or just theirs. Thanks,
      Amina
    • The amount of lactose in the finished kefir will depend on how long you culture it. The longer it cultures, the less lactose will be in it.

  • From hildegard at 2/26/12 3:49 PM
    • Can you make kefir with instant non-fat dry milk? Thank you
    • You could probably culture a batch of instant non-fat dry milk with kefir grains, but the grains would not survive well as the dry milk is usually very highly processed and does not provide a lot of nutrient for the grains to grow and reproduce.

  • From Jessica at 3/8/12 9:23 AM
    • Can you use this kefir starter set with coconut milk instead of cow's milk?
    • Yes however the grains must be rehydrated using dairy milk. After rehydration, you can put them into coconut milk. The grains will survive and culture coconut milk but they do not seem to grow well in coconut milk so plan to put them back into dairy milk occasionally, especially if you want your grains to grow and multiply.

    • Oh no! I was rehydrating my kefir grains and accidently used a metal spoon. Have I ruined them? They have not started making proper kefir yet, and I am not sure what they are supposed to be doing at this point in the process. Can you tell me how sensitive they are to this sort of mistake?
      Thanks
    • The grains are probably ok, especially if the spoon is stainless steel. Brief contact with the metal will likely not harm them. Continue with the rehydration process and contact customer service if you have further problems.

    • I want to make my own keifer at home but my family doesn't consume enough to make a new batch ever 24-24 hour. We usually go through 1 qt a week.

What do you do with the grains in between batchs?
    • In between batches you can add your kefir grains to a cup of milk and set them in the refrigerator. They will be good for about 2 weeks that way!

  • From Erica at 4/18/12 3:05 PM

    • Hello! I wanted to know if it's okay to use real silver spoons (not stainless steel) with the kefir. If not, I suppose wood would be okay?

      Thank you!
    • Silver has anti-microbial properties and shouldn't be used with your grains. Stainless steel is fine but when in doubt, go with the wooden spoons :)

    • In instructions for Rehydrating Kefir Grains: Can I use 1/4 or 1/2 cup fresh milk to rehydrating Kefir Grains instead of one cup as indicated in the instruction?
If idea to submerge Kefir Grains completely in the milk, I think 1/4 or maximum 1/2 cup is more than sufficient. Why waste one cup of fresh milk?
      Let me know.
    • We recommend using 1 cup of milk to rehydrate the grains. As the grains rehydrate, you are also providing food for them. 1/4 cup of milk would not be enough to feed the grains and keep them healthy.

I was amazed at how fast I received my kefir starter kit after I ordered it. Once it arrived, I got started with the re-hydration and reactivation process. My next shock was that on the second day of the process I found that I had a thick, creamy, and very mild kefir waiting for me. I have been enjoying the stuff ever since. I can't recommend this product enough. It is so much better than any store bought that I have ever tried.
Now I am ordering the Bulgarian yogurt starter. We will see where that goes.. (Posted on July 25, 2014)
Mild, thick kefir with the right milk Review by Anne from Garner

My first week of kefir making did not go well. I had bought a store brand organic milk, since the first week the kefir pretty much wakes up and starts producing, and I did not want to waste expensive milk for this process. After the second day in the store brand milk, my kefir started making an extremely foamy, yeasty brew, that tasted like alcohol. I tried fixing this overgrowth of yeast any way I could think of without success. I was about to throw away the kefir grains. I had run out of the cheaper organic milk, and just to keep the kefir until the next day, I added my usual drinking milk, a brand name organic whole milk from pasture raised cows. The next morning I had perfect mild wonderful kefir ! The store brand milk obviously caused this yeast overgrowth, so if you run into this problem, change milk brand.
I have a glass of this kefir every morning now. It tastes wonderful. Mild, and so thick, I could use it like a yogurt.

Note from CFH The yogurt texture can be a little stressful for small grains. We normally recommend culturing to a "thickened-milk" texture, more like buttermilk to ensure that the new grains are getting plenty of fresh food (milk). Great job on the change in milk, it can certainly make a difference and don't forget to try a second fermentation on your finished milk kefir. This product shipped fast and was everything it said it was going to be. Quality product. My grains were alive and kicking right away. Only problem is I'm now making too much kefir. I am so much more aware of the milk now (ultra high pasteurized v. pasteurized). I accidentally used ultra high pasteurized, however, and my kefir turned out just fine. I was worried I was going to kill it. Pretty tough grains. Highly recommend this to anyone spending upwards of $5 kefir at the store. (Posted on June 24, 2014)

I was buying so much milk kiefer from the store and at $4 a small bottle, I decided to do some research and make my own milk kiefer. I'm so glad that I did.
I have been using the milk kiefer to make a home-made ranch dressing and fruit smoothies. It took only a day to get the kiefer started, but now I'm making more milk kiefer than I can keep up with. Thanks for a successful science experiment that tastes great! (Posted on June 17, 2014)

I love this Kefir culture starter kit. The kefir is very tasty and smooth. I like to strain it after 1 day into another container and do a second 1 day fermentation with a few frozen organic strawberries. My 3 year old son calls it "strawberry milk" and loves it! The little strainer it comes with is helpful to have - I am not sure if I could have found a similar one made out of plastic elsewhere. (Posted on June 4, 2014)

I have had kefir before but lost it while gone from my home, since I didn't know how to store it. I started to look for it on line and came across "cultures for health.com" BEST THING I EVER DID. my grains have been growing so fast and are so healthy, I have to give some away already. I am trying to get everyone who will listen about kefir. I would recommend to every one out there to buy their milk kefir from cultures from this company. their customer service is great, always willing to help and always there, on phone or chat. it is wonderful stuff and so healthy from this company, I don't know if others had the exceedingly prolific growth I experienced but I wouldn't use any other place or company to buy cultured foods. EXCELLENT company and excellent product. thank you so much. (Posted on May 27, 2014)

My start was a little rough, tried two non-organic milks over two+ weeks (the first one would only half ferment and the second would *not* ferment for me at all) before trying organic milk and PRESTO! Grains are fermenting like little pros :) Now I have more kefir than I know what to do with and am venturing into trying cheeses and dressings made with a kefir base. Wonderful product, highly recommend this starter kit! (Posted on May 25, 2014)

Well worth the money. I was having trouble finding whole milk kefir in my local grocery stores, but I do have access to semi-local whole milk that is pasteurized at the lowest temp possible. Now that I have the kefir grains and plastic strainer, I can make whole milk kefir every day! It is wonderful. (Posted on May 19, 2014)

After a round of antibiotics, I became gluten-intolerant at 72 yrs of age. My diet is now gluten-free and I have consumed many probiotic products in an effort to get back in balance, but I still did not feel 100% Nothing worked until I made my own kefir. The improvement in my gut health was noticeable in days. It's been two weeks now and I look forward to my daily drink. I use whole Jersey milk with the cream on the top. It's so easy to make. I am telling everyone about your life-giving product. Thank you, thank you. (Posted on May 10, 2014)

The product is excellent but your customer service is even better. I was new to making Kefir (or any fermented product) and your staff was very helpful in resolving the problems that I created for myself. My only problem is that the very active grains make more than I can use. I am working to resolve that problem. (Posted on May 3, 2014)

To tell you the truth, we had never heard about kefir until my wife's Doctor told us to buy Kefir at a local grocery store. In just a few days she started getting relief. She is still on the IV and continues to use Kefir. The Dr. told us to do a little of our own research. I found Cultures for Health on youtube. After a few days, I ordered my own kefir grains thinking I would be able to save money by making it myself. The results have been great! We are both using kefir now and my wife's sister is using the kefir I make as well. I've been flavoring my kefir with strawberries and we love it! Thank you Cultures for Health.
