An excellent basic sourdough culture.

Originating in the 1800s, this is an easy culture to use, rises quickly, and makes wonderful bread. For best results, we recommend feeding your sourdough starter weekly.

This sourdough starter is available as a dried culture. Dried sourdough starters are shelf- stable and do not have to be fed or cared for immediately. Dried sourdough starters can be ready to create baked goods within 3 to 5 days.

Detailed instructions will be included with your order. Click here to view our New England Sourdough instructions.

    • I know this starter culture is meant for white flour, but can you use it in wheat as well? Thanks!
    • You can convert any sourdough starter to thrive on a different flour than it was grown with. It takes a few days, and basically you just do your regular feedings with the new flour until it is converted.

You wouldn't use the same starter to go back and forth though. You could divide your starter, and keep two sets going at the same time if you like to bake with different kinds of flours.

  • From Julie at 1/17/12 5:17 PM
    • So do you use white all-purpose flour or what kind of flour can I use. Can I grind my own soft wheat flour for it?
      Thanks
    • Each sourdough starter is created for a specific type flour. We recommend activating your starter using that specific flour (whole wheat, white, rye, etc). Once your starter is established, you can switch flour.

Feeding your sourdough culture with freshly ground flour is problematic as sourdough culture prefers aged flour. Therefore we recommend placing your freshly ground flour in a bowl on the counter covered lightly with a dish towel for several weeks before using it to feed your sourdough culture. Once it is time to bake bread, you can use freshly ground flour as the flour portion of the bread recipe.

    • The second time I added flour to the starter to activate it- nothing happened! I followed the instructions carefully. It is warm, but not too warm. It has been 12 hours. Should I wait longer? There is one or two bubbles on top, but it has not doubled in size at all! On top is a thin watery liquid and the flour is on the bottom of the bowl.
    • It can take some time to activate the starter, just keep on your feeding schedule, stir well to get a lot of air in at feeding time and be patient. : ) The layer of liquid usually indicates that the starter is getting hungry so be sure to stay on your feeding schedule even if the starter doesn't double in size or have lots of bubbles.

    • I have never made bread before. I love sourdough bread but like to be able to taste the sourness in it. What would be the best starter to use for that and for someone making bread for the first time (you know, something not to complicated. If that is possible)?
    • The sourness of the bread depends on how you handle it. For more information see this article:

Working with this starter is my first attempt, ever, at making bread. The starter is great, and even though I turned out a loaf of bread with an outstandingly hard crust, the inside was lovely--soft and tasty. I'm looking forward to giving it another try. Aside from bread, I've also made muffins and pancakes with my starter. Muffins were good, and pancakes are far and away my family's favorite (and my oldest child is a pancake connoisseur, so that's no small compliment). (Posted on June 18, 2014)

This is not my first experience with sourdough - I have made my own before, and have received starters from a friend as well. It is my first experience here however - and it has been a little different. I am not hugely learned in sourdough yet, but in the past - I have always kept my sourdough very wet. The directions for this sourdough keeps it very dry - it is very doughy. This is because of the 1:1:2 ratio (starter:water:flour). It was kind of hard to get used to at first because it is difficult to stir, however the end product turns out beautiful every time. I have made pizza dough, bread, tortillas, pancakes and cookies so far and all turned out wonderful. One thing I've found different about this sourdough than my past, is that when I want a really "sour" dough - it takes forever, and then it really isn't even as sour as I'd like. My past sourdough starters only took about 24 hours of sitting to turn out a very sour dough. This one is just very mild. It is sour - don't get me wrong, but not in a strong way. I'd like to purchase the San Fran starter next just to have something a little stronger in flavor sometimes. Great starter though! (Posted on June 4, 2014)

I started this during a kitchen remodel under less than ideal conditions. It took a little longer than last time to start (probably due to lower temperatures), but took off on the 4th day or so. I was so relieved to have it start even when I didn't do everything right. (Posted on May 14, 2014)

I tried making my own sour dough and this was well worth the cost and time savings. The directions are very well written and easy to follow to get the best final product. I made coffee cake with all my "leftover" starter, which was a BIG hit!! (Posted on April 7, 2014)

I've been a little frustrated working with my homemade starter and decided to give this New England Starter a try. The first 48 hours were an act of faith but since then it has exceeded my expectations. I'm getting ready-to-bake loaves in 5 hours! This is a great product, just follow the supplied instructions and it won't let you down. (Posted on March 25, 2014)

This is the first sourdough culture I have tried from CFH and I am very happy with my choice. It has a pleasant sourdough flavor, but not terribly strong. The best part is that it is a very lively starter - activated very quickly and comes back to life equally as quickly. I only give the bread one rise, and it is ready to go in the oven in about 5 hours, which is fast for sourdough. I also have to thank CFH for great customer service - I used the chat feature a couple times to get some advice on a few things, and they were fantastic. Thanks! (Posted on March 10, 2014)

the product arrived quickly, and I immediately went to it and started the culture. I gave it several days as the instructions say. I cannot say I had good luck with this and the constant feeding it seemed to need was a bit ridiculous. Sadly, I threw it out.

Easy sourdough Review by Bonnie

This is an easy sourdough to activate and work with. Someone else has used the word "robust" and that seems a perfect description. It might be a mild flavor but it still does have a sourdough flavor that is very popular at our house. I thoroughly enjoy making bread with this starter. (Posted on December 26, 2013)

This starter has been very active from the beginning. My previous starter was a whole grain sourdough starter and was a bit sour for my family. This starter has a more mild flavor, which is working well for regular sandwich bread. Even my picky husband is slowly switching over to sourdough. I definitely like to feed it twice a day, making sure to "dump" all but about 1/4 cup of starter to culture the next feeding of flour. I have a bowl, that I keep in my fridge to hold the "dumped" sourdough, which I use in all kinds of recipes. I am well pleased. (Posted on December 9, 2013)

I've tried to start my own sourdough and it was a dismal failure. This worked great. After it was started, it was quite robust. Only a few hours out of the fridge and it is bubbling away. works well for both pancakes and bread. (Posted on November 27, 2013)

I am just at the end of the activation process for my New England Sourdough Starter, and so far, so good. I have made biscuits & pancakes and am looking forward to trying my first loaf of bread this weekend. Directions were easy to follow, and everything so far has been tasty.

I made my first loaf of sourdough bread with this starter yesterday. It turned out really good. My husband loved it. I have never baked a loaf of bread in my life so this is really quite something. I am so excited that I have a live culture that will potentially last forever if I feed it and care for it. I am really happy that I purchased it. Thank you Cultures for Health for your wonderful product and service! (Posted on October 28, 2013)

I'm a really bad sourdough mom. I am an avid baker, but life gets in the way--sometimes a lot. I enjoyed this mild, yet super powerful starter (I've never worked with one so robust before!) for a few months, and then kids and work and general crazy took over and it found itself languishing at the back of my fridge, unfed. I couldn't bring myself to toss it. When I cleaned the fridge, I would smell it and throw out the excess dark water at the top, and it smelled good still. So back in the fridge it went...starving for over a year. Finally, I got up the guts to test it to see if it was really dead. I pulled it out, got it a clean jar and fed it. WOW! It went nuts. Two feedings and it was ready to party. I made a beautiful loaf that night. It's bubbling along happily now, and I know I can't kill it.

It has a mild, not very sour taste. My older kid wants a more sour bread, so I'm adding in a San Fransisco to the rotation soon. But this is great for sourdough that tastes like regular yeast when you don't want all the tangy flavor. (Posted on September 22, 2013)

I have been very happy with this starter-even the children, who were less than thrilled with my sourdough recipes in the past, have truly enjoyed the pancakes, waffles, and breads that I've been making with this starter. Thanks for another great product! (Posted on February 2, 2011)
