Weigh down your fermented vegetables using this ceramic fermentation weight. Keeping vegetables weighted under the brine keeps the vegetables from drying out and can help prevent mold.

  • Approximately 3 in. (7.6 cm.) diameter
  • Fit most standard wide-mouth style canning jars (quart and half-gallon sizes)
  • Two interlocking pieces for easy placement
  • Food grade ceramic
  • Lead-free
  • Hand wash with vinegar or warm water (do not use soap)

 

Instructions for use:

Rinse well before using, with vinegar or warm water. Do not use soap. Fill the fermentation vessel with the prepared vegetables leaving appropriate headspace, place the ceramic weights on top of the vegetables to ensure the vegetables sit under the brine. Cover the vessel if desired. Allow the vegetables to ferment. Remove the ceramic weight prior to storing or consuming the vegetables.

  • Red Art, a base clay containing iron oxide, salt, and feldspars  
  • AP Fire Clay
  • Gold Art, a base clay
  • Om4 Ball Clay   
  • Feldspar
  • Grog

I use a tried and true clay recipe I can trace back 80 years through various craftspeople I have known over the years.  

The weights are not glazed but rather fired 2,350 degrees using an oxidation technique. This process vitrifies the body of the clay making the molecules so dense that water and other elements cannot penetrate the surface thus rendering the clay food safe.

    • I accidentally forgot to not use soap on my weights and I put them in the dishwater (Dishmate dish soap) and they sat in there for a while. According to your answer above, it looks like water cannot penetrate the weights. Do I have to throw them away or can I salvage them by soaking them in vinegar?

    • A 12-24 hour soak in vinegar, followed by a thorough rinsing, should remove the soap residue from your weights.

    • The quantity shows 1. Does this mean one each ceramic weight, or one set of weights? If so, how many weights come in a set?

    • Can I use this instead of the glass weights in the 1/2 and 1 gallon glass fermentation containers?
    • You may use this or the Large Ceramic Weight in the glass Fermented Vegetable Masters. The Large Weight may be a better fit for these larger jars, but these small weights will certainly work, maybe 2 sets in one jar, distributed over the surface, would be best.

I was reluctant to purchase b/c how many people said how light they are and it is true if your looking for something to hold down a really loose ferment than this might not bbs the right thing for you but these worked great for my kraut. I used a full cabbage leaf then this on top of that. the are also perfect for carrots to keep them under the brine. I really think you can't got wrong for the price. (Posted on July 26, 2014)

These fit beautifully inside a widemouth quart mason jar. Because of the way they fit snugly under the curve in the jar, they kept the vegetables in place and under the brine perfectly. They stayed in place and I didn't even worry about them moving because of the way they fit the jar.

The small ceramic fermentation weight is a great product. It is small, but very effective. It stays in place during fermentation, and is less awkward than some of the other methods. Before I tried the ceramic weight, I used plastic bags filled with water. They were awkward and unpredictable. I could see my fermenting sauerkraut better with the ceramic weight.I want to commend CFH for their customer service and for following through on each customer. I love these! I wish they were sold in a bulk value pack. I agree with others that I wish they were a little more weighty. But, I've used them for the half-gallon Ball jars and they work really well. These weights are too light to actually weigh down things like shredded cabbage, carrots, and beets. They also aren't big enough to really cover space in a 2-qt wide mouth mason jar (allowing shreds to escape through gaps).

I ended up folding a full leave of cabbage and wedging it in on top of my shredded veggies to hold them down...I put the weight on top of the cabbage leaf, but I don't think it really did anything.

I think these are made for a specific type of jar. Though they do an ok job for their intended purpose I don't think they are heavy enough. They are definitely not meant for bigger jars like the 1/2 gallon size and food will still escape through them. (Posted on May 20, 2014)

These small ceramic fermentation weights are perfect for standard wide mouth canning jars. I'm currently using them to make a small batch of sauerkraut and its doing a great job keeping the cabbage below the brine in the jar. I could see a great benefit if they were just a bit heavier to keep larger veggie ferments down easier but most of the time, these are great. (Posted on April 17, 2014)

I thought these might work based on the description but they are a little too small for half gallon wide mouth mason jars. Since they are zig zag in shape, you can fit them in the small mouthed jars. It did not cover the cabbage fully so I had to add my glass weights too.
I could fit three pieces in the half gallon jar. I will have to buy the large size to see how they will fit. (Posted on February 28, 2014)

I ordered one of each size. I also expected them to be bigger, based on the product descriptions and the previous reviews, but they do seem quite a bit too small either for wide-mouthed jars (the smaller ones) or for crocks (the "larger" ones). The crock size in particular is ridiculously puny for the task. I will try them, but I don't think I will try them on their own because I don't want to risk their not working and ruining a whole batch or much of a batch.

Based on the review I read, I expected these to be bigger. Having tried them, they seem too small for wide-mouthed jars (quart-size). I had cabbage that floated above them, escaping from the sides or the crack, so I still had a layer of cabbage at the top that might get moldy. I love the idea and will probably use them, but I rated the quality and value a little lower because they don't seem to be doing as good of a job as I had expected. (Posted on February 21, 2014)

I like to ferment several small batches of krauts, so I can make them all different, instead of one large batch. These weights are perfect to use in a wide mouth mason jar. I'd definitely recommend them. Since they are in two pieces, they are easy to add and remove from the jars. (Posted on February 20, 2014)
