This starter kit provided all we needed to start brewing water kefir. Two weeks in and we are LOVING it. The instructions are thorough and the grains are easy to care for. Flavoring possibilities are limited only by your imagination. A couple of favorites so far are cherry-almond (secondary ferment of 2 quarts wk with a generous handful of dried cherries and almond extract to taste) and apple-ginger (secondary ferment with dried apples and a few slices of fresh ginger). I read about making kefir soda on a blog and had to try it. My family has just started the journey of real food. We made our first batch, which was easier than I thought it would be, and my whole family loves it. It is helping my husband kick his soda habit. I bought grolsch style beer bottles, and it seems like it just keeps getting better the more batches we make. The minerals are a great part of the package, especially since we have RO water. I am a newbie to brewing Kefir water so it was nice to have the kit with everything I needed except the jars. I have made about 4 batches so far and my grains are hydrated & white, not much bubbling going on but I guess that will come. Thanks for a great product. (Posted on 10/24/2013)
The instructions were very easy to follow and, as indicated, I had great kefir after ~3 batches. I did a second fermentation with organic tart cherry juice and a little lemon juice...WOW! I am so thrilled with my Water Kefir Starter Kit. I like having pretty much everything I need in one package. The instruction manual is very thorough and easy to follow, with helpful suggestions for improving carbonation. I had never brewed water kefir before and within a matter of days I had my first successful batch. I use Sucanat for my sugar and only add flavor to the second ferment. So far I've made a lemon, cranberry-orange, lemon-ginger, grapefruit and cherry flavored 'soda'. The cherry is my favorite so far - I just use cherry juice. Thanks for making this product available! I was very nervous about keeping the grains alive. I am about 3-4 weeks into it. I did a live chat with one of the girls and she helped me understand what the kefir should/may look like and advised some molasses. I had forgotten about the mineral drops that came with the kit, so I have been adding a drop or two to each batch. I am trying my first re-ferment and cannot wait to see if it works out.
