There are two primary methods for removing water kefir grains:
Use a Plastic Mesh Strainer to strain the grains out of the water kefir. This is our favorite method. The grains can sit loose in the kefir while it’s culturing but once it’s done, they can be quickly and easily removed and added to new sugar water. Check out our website for a set of plastic mesh strainers. They are also useful for straining milk kefir and kombucha.
Use a cotton muslin bag to contain the kefir grains. This method also works well although you will need to be sure the bag is securely closed and that it is large enough to accommodate the kefir grains multiplying. We have Large Cotton Muslin Bags available on our website although we strongly recommend the larger bags to accommodate growth of the kefir grains.
If you want your water kefir grains to grow and multiply, there are several ways to encourage them to do so.
