"Great tool to have for beginners "

I just started making Kombucha, and these have been very useful in monitoring the process and learning how the taste corresponds to pH. These strips read a pH range of 2.8 to 4.4; however, it would be nice to have strips that read as low as 2.6, though these certainly help.

Testing the pH of Kombucha

Testing pH is not a requirement for Kombucha brewing. In fact, most home brewers do not test the pH level of their batches. However if deviating from the standard recipe (e.g., use less sugar, use a tea other than black or green tea, etc.), pH can be a good indicator of culturing progress. Ultimately we recommend using good judgment and adhering to a standard recipe when brewing Kombucha Tea. If in doubt, never consume Kombucha Tea that looks, smells, or tastes unpleasant.

OK, I have to make a disclosure up front. I have not opened these yet. However, I have been using the ones that come with the kombucha starter SCOBY. They are the same thing and I'll use them until I run out, then open the ones I purchased.

When I placed my order for the starter SCOBY, the customer service rep (Anita) told me about these. It had not occurred to me that I would need them, but it makes perfect sense when you think about it. They are not exactly what I was expecting -- they are much better.

Remember high school science class (chemistry?). Well back in the day we had some test strips that turned one color if a solution was acidic and a different color if the same solution were a base (alkaline). But I digress.

These strips turn various shades or hues of green depending upon how acidic the solution is. The "pad" starts out almost blue. As it turns lighter shades of green, it indicates that the solution is more acidic. Pretty easy, right? It gets better. If you hold the test strip next to an indicator on the bottle it comes in, you match the shade of the strip to the shad on the bottle and it tells you the approximate pH value of your tea.

So there you have it. Well worth the money and so simple to use that even an old school guy like me can do it.

I'm new to fermenting and needed assurance that my ferments were acidic enough. This strips quickly changed color and I could match that with the ph indicator on the container. I am definitely more confident about the safety of my products and sharing them with friends. Thanks for a very good product!

I had tried another brand of strips and they did not measure ph on fermented foods at all - don't know why. After checking out several brands, I decided to order these and they work just fine! The only drawback is they start with 4.4 and I would like strips that start a little higher to ensure that my food is at 4.6 or lower.

I use them to check the pH of my kombucha. Although the color of the wetted test strips don't exactly match the swatches, they are very helpful for consistent brewing.

I am using to test the acidity of my Kombucha tea. It helps to know if the KT is ready or not. I wish there was a clearer difference between the colors. would be easier to determine the acidity of the tea. But I do like it very much.

I am new to kombucha making, so these strips are very valuable to me. There is no guessing because the ph level tells you when it's ready. I also taste it when I check the ph level so that in the future I will be able to know when it's ready without using the strips.

    • How do you exactly use the test strip to measure the ph of Kombucha tea?
    • Simply dip the end of the strip that has the tiny paper pad into a sample of your kombucha for 1-2 seconds. In 10-15 seconds the strip will change color. Hold the small square up to the enclosed color chart to determine the pH. Kombucha is ready when it registers at 4.0 or lower.

    • What is the best pH we are looking for?
    • The pH test strips are normally used to test Kombucha. If that is what you are making, we recommend a pH between 4.0 and 2.5. If you are activating a scoby, a pH of 3.5 to 3.0 would be helpful.

    • When in the fermentation process should I PH test? After the first fermentation or after the second?
    • Usually this is done in the first fermentation. You can measure the pH at the beginning, just to have a baseline to compare to future readings. You can then measure the pH again at 7 days, or anytime after that. Please contact customer support if you have more questions!

    • Hi there

If ph testing isn't really nessesary then why are Ph test strips included in the kombucha tea starter kit?

As a beginner, should I use the ph strips until I get the hang of brewing kombucha?

      Thanks!
    • The pH strips can be helpful if one would like to see that their brew is progressively getting more acidic as the days go on. Some people like this confirmation, but it is not necessary as one can also smell and taste the brew getting more acidic. As a beginner, If you'd like help using them, feel free to contact us by phone or chat!
