These pH paper testing strips can be used to test fermented beverages such as Kombucha Tea and wine. Kombucha Tea is ready to drink when it registers at 4.0 or lower.
Testing Strip Range: 2.8 - 4.4
100 pH papers per vial
More information: pH testing is not a requirement for Kombucha brewing in fact most home brewers do not test the pH level of their batches. However, we do recommend pH testing if a person wishes to deviate from a standard recipe (e.g. use less sugar, use a tea other than black or green tea, etc.) or has a batch which appears to be culturing abnormally. Ultimately we recommend using good judgement and adhering to a standard recipe when brewing Kombucha Tea. If in doubt, test the pH level and never consume Kombucha Tea that looks, smells or tastes unpleasant.
Questions on pH Indicator Strips

- Your ph strip gave me a yellow/gold color when I tested a smaller amount (one pint) of kombucha brewed for 18 days. Since it does not come close to the color strip on the container what does this mean - a more acidic brew or what?
My several other brews, gallon size, tested at the low end of the color chart but close enough to get a good idea of the acid level.
Thanks for any help you give.
- A yellow-gold color is probably indicating a pH around 5 or 6, but the strips are not supposed to measure in that range. It may mean that the strip is defective, or that the pH of the kombucha is very high - meaning it is not acidic enough to be safe. (The wrong bacteria can flourish at that high a pH, and mold can take hold as well.)
You can try adding some distilled vinegar or commercial kombucha to see if you can bring the pH down. Or, check to see if the strips are defective by measuring something else. The pH of distilled vinegar, for instance, should be about 2.4.

- Can these be used to test ph levels of other things or just kombucha tea or wine? Pickles or other canned goods? I couldn't tell from the product description.
Thanks! - A pH strip just measures acid/alkaline level. Ours measure within a certain range but should be fine for other fermented products.
