Description

Details

Make pickles, sauerkraut, kimchi, and more using your wide-mouth canning jars.

The Perfect Pickler Includes

  • Lid and grommet
  • A s-style airlock which fits on standard wide-mouth canning jars (specifically Kerr* and Ball* brands of jars).
  • A rubber gasket ring to further seal the jar and pressurize the contents.
  • A spacer cup which floats under the lid to collect brine overflow, exhaust gas, and maintain an air sequestered environment.
  • 1/4 lb. Celtic sea salt
  • Instructions
  • Does not include the jar. Use with standard wide-mouth canning jars (specifically Kerr* and Ball* brands). Jars are generally available from your local variety-style department store in pint, quart, and half-gallon sizes

More About the Perfect Pickler

  • Materials: BPA- and phthalate-free.
  • Very simple to use.
  • Eliminates air while keeping the fermenting vegetables under the brine resulting in less scum and mold formation while also generally yielding a crunchier end product.
  • Air and gasses created through fermentation escape through the water-filled airlock but new air cannot enter keeping your fermenting vegetables safe.
  • Eliminates the need to open the container during fermentation to check on the vegetables or to remove scum and mold from the surface.
  • Can be used with just vegetables, salt, and water. Can also be used with whey or a starter culture if desired.
  • Airlock lid can be switched out for a solid lid after fermentation for easy storage in the refrigerator.
  • Pickles and other fermented vegetables can be made in as little as 4 days (although many people prefer the taste profile possible from longer fermentation periods).

*Ball and Kerr are trademarked brand names of their respective manufacturers.

I have had great success make beet kraut twice now. We think it tastes better than the store bought. Love that I don't have to worry about slimy mold. I am planning on giving it as a gift to my friends for Christmas.

What a good way to keep your sauerkraut out of the air yet it can still breathe. It's easy to make a jar full, put another lid on it and refrigerate, and start a new batch. I am not getting any scum on the surface of the kraut and when I had tried fermentation previously I always had to skim it off.

The lid with air lock, the instructions, and the salt sample combined to make the perfect sauerkraut, as compared to previous attempts where I used my own weight (a jar with rocks) and a cheesecloth cover. So I am very happy with my purchase and actually bought a second setup so I could run two different batches at the same time. No sign of molds in the jar and very easy to monitor the progress.
The only part of the gear that doesn't seem to add anything to the set-up is the metal cup. It does not weight the veggies down, so I purchased two of the split ceramic weights (which I highly recommend) made for quart jar batches, and the resulting set-up is as close to perfect and foolproof as it gets.

This was recommended to me by a friend. I did my first couple of batches of fermented veggies without it, and had to skim the mold off diligently. It was so nice to get the air lock setup and not have to worry about that. I also like the little overflow cup that helps push the veggies down a bit and raises the brine level up.

I love this, and have used it twice already. It works very well, but it is NOT worth the price. It's too expensive for what it is. Shouldn't cost more than about $5.00

Something so simple, and yet so effective, makes me marvel at the ingenuity of its designers. When I put the valve unit into the lid's black rubber-sealed hole, sometimes the seal falls through and I have to re-attach it. Not a problem, but it does expose the simplicity of the design. I am very glad to have it, and it is in use constantly. Bravo to the entrepreneurial spirit who brought it forth! Thanks for helping us all stay healthy on a budget.

  17. Great But Item Missing.

I bought this item because I needed a smaller container than the 1 gallon fermenter I use for cabbage. I was disappointed that there was no weight in the package. I had to buy those separate. Now that I bought the kit, I wish they sold just the top for a lower price. I am happy with what I received.

Response from CFH: There is not a "weight" in the sense of a stone or rock, but instead there should have been a small stainless steel cup that you fill with water that sits on top of the veggies.

The product works well. The veggies came out perfect. I like the DVD as it is informational for beginners. Some of the segments of the video are poor quality but get the point across anyway. It is a little overpriced but if you think of it in gift terms it's a good deal. I would buy this again.

  25. Very expensive and moisture problem. DIY is better!

The concept is great, as it certainly provides an effective airlock. However, after use I cannot clear the moisture out of the airlock, even with a paper "wick". The three-piece airlocks dry in record time and are easier to clean...not to mention WAY less expensive. The price of this kit is prohibitive. I need multiple lids and airlocks, as I do a lot of fermenting in 2 quart jars. So...as a DIY project, you can simply buy six white plastic lids ($6-7), drill them, and insert grommets (12-15 for under $10). Buy the three-piece airlocks at about $1.00 each. That's six lids with airlocks for $18.00. These widemouth lids will fit any size or brand of standard jar, as long as the jars are also widemouth.

    • The airlock comes with a cap. Should that cap stay on during the fermentation, or should it be open to the air?
    • The small cap should be on the airlock during fermentation.

    • Does the Perfect Pickler also fit Bernardin wide mouth mason jars? Thanks.
    • We do not carry the Bernardin products. The Perfect Pickler fits on most standard wide mouth canning jars including Ball. If a Ball lid fits your Bernardin jar, the Perfect Pickler will fit as well.

  • From Brian at 3/16/2015 4:12 PM
    • So, these lids will fit on a half gallon wide mouth Ball or Kerr jar, and will then perform the same function as the Fermented Vegetable Master? It is not clear to me how the pictured device attaches to the lid of the jar. Thanks.
    • Yes, they fit on standard wide mouth Ball or Kerr jars and work the same as the Fermented Vegetable Master. The plastic airlock pieces fits inside a hole in the lid, just like the FVM. The lid screws on to the top of the jar.
    • Do you find this question helpful?  Yes   No
  • From Re at 1/7/2015 11:05 PM
    • Do these lids contain formaldehyde?
I read that as long as it is not heated to 400+ it should be safe, but would like to know. Thanks.
    • We received the following response from the wonderful people at Perfect Pickler:

"Our lids are made with all food grade materials and safe for use as they are intended. In addition, the amount of contact with the food in the jar and the lid should be almost non-existent. Maybe jostling the jar in transferring locations would cause some incidental contact but this is negligible.

At no time in the making of fermented foods is heat used so this is not an issue."
    • Do you find this question helpful?  Yes   No
  • From Mary at 11/16/2014 8:45 AM
    • I thought that stainless steel was not to be used in fermentation??
    • High quality stainless steel is fine for use with cultured foods, and is standard in commercial production. Reactive metals such as aluminum and nickel should be avoided.
    • Do you find this question helpful?  Yes   No
  • From Wendi at 9/12/2014 9:45 AM
    • Can I purchase the kit with an extra airlock lid assembly so I can ferment two different things at once or must I purchase two kits?
    • The Perfect Pickler is only a lid and airlock assembly. There is no jar included. You would need to purchase 2 Perfect Picklers to ferment two separate things at the same time.

    • Can I use the Perfect Pickler to make Kefir (I have the grains) ?
    • No, kefir grains need oxygen to thrive. We do not recommend a tight seal or airlock for culturing your grains.
    • Do you find this question helpful?  Yes   No
  • From Jim at 6/14/2014 9:10 AM
    • Ball jars seem to have two diameters. What is the diameter of the Perfect Pickler lid?
    • Ball or other canning jars come in wide-mouth and regular. The Perfect Pickler fits a wide-mouth (3-inch diameter) canning jar.

    • Is this made in the USA?
    • From the Perfect Pickler Company:

Our kits are assembled in Bradenton, Florida by local residents. Our kit parts come from a variety of manufacturers from here and around the world. Whenever we can source American made parts we do. All of our parts are bought from local and/or American wholesalers.
