Our Milk Kefir Starter Kit includes:

Milk kefir grains are live active cultures consisting of yeast and bacteria existing in a symbiotic relationship. Adding the kefir grains to fresh milk yields a probiotic drink within 24 to 48 hours. This dairy kefir culture is reusable and, with care, will allow you to make kefir over and over again.

  • Traditional heirloom-style kefir culture (a.k.a. "grains" due to appearance); not a powdered starter culture
  • Reusable culture; makes a new batch of kefir every 18 to 48 hours
  • With proper care, the culture can be used indefinitely to create delicious probiotic-rich kefir
  • Cultures on the counter at 67° to 80°F; no heating appliance required

Milk kefir grains are a starter culture that can be used with soy or coconut milk if care is taken to occasionally revitalize them in dairy milk. (Complete instructions will be included with each order.) Coconut kefir in particular is quite thick, rich, and delicious. Click here for information on making coconut kefir.

There are numerous uses for kefir including making a type of cream cheese, adding to smoothies, and drinking alone. Kefir can also be flavored after it has cultured and the kefir grains have been removed. Click here for more information on the numerous strains of bacteria and yeast generally known to comprise milk kefir grains.

Milk Kefir Grains Ingredients: Organic whole milk, live active cultures. Packaged with a small amount of organic powdered milk to extend shelf life.

Milk kefir grains are produced in a facility that also processes soy, wheat, nut, and fish products.

Shipping Information: Our milk kefir grains are shipped in a dehydrated state in a barrier-sealed packet. Upon receipt, the dairy grains can be rehydrated in fresh milk (this process usually takes 5 to 7 days) then used to make kefir by adding the grains to fresh milk, stirring, covering, and leaving at room temperature until the desired consistency is reached (no more than 48 hours).

Complete instructions are included with each order. Click here to view our kefir instructions.

Why I Love This Product

Making milk kefir is easy, simple, and fruitful... when you have good kefir grains. I have been making milk kefir for our family for years and have sourced kefir grains both from Cultures for Health and from friends who had gotten them from a friend who had gotten them from a friend. The Cultures for Health milk kefir grains have worked wonderfully every time... as long as I took proper care of them. At one point I was unable to get my grains to multiply or grow in size, but soon discovered that our kitchen was much too cold for them to thrive. With some changes, the grains became active and began to multiply with fervor. If it weren't for my own forgetfulness, I believe these grains could last a lifetime. • I'd like to use the Kefir Grains for raw goat's milk. When I get them, can I rehydrate them in raw goat's milk so they will work better when I make my first batch?
    • You can rehydrate your grains in goat milk but you will need to pasteurize the milk until the grains are producing good kefir and have grown a little. You might want to plan on a few weeks of pasteurizing your raw milk but be sure it has completely cooled to room temp or lower before adding the grains, excessive heat will damage the grains.

    • If the milk kefir starter is ordered would I also need to
order a cookbook for recipes? Are instructions included
for making sour cream and cheese?
    • It comes with instructions on how to make milk kefir and kefir cheese, but not sour cream. You can refer here for more recipes: http://www.culturesforhealth.com/kefir

    • How long can I store milk kefir in the fridge (not the grains themselves)?
    • Milk kefir may be stored in the refrigerator for 3-4 weeks or more. The kefir will continue to culture slowly, so you may notice that the taste is stronger if stored for a longer time.

The instructions that came with the kefir grains were so helpful, and the website is even more helpful. The grains rehydrated just as they were supposed to, and now I have fresh kefir every morning for our morning smoothies. I love it! (Posted on April 18, 2014)

I decided to try kefir after realizing I could use some probiotic support. I bought a quart from the store to see what it was supposed to be like, and while the homemade isn't quite as yogurty (because the store-bought has additives like pectin), I love making it! I've been making smoothies every day for my kids and myself, and have noticed the benefits. Since this was my first time ever doing any kind of fermenting, I really didn't know what to expect. Customer service was phenomenal with asking all my questions and really going above and beyond to make sure my experience was positive. (Posted on April 17, 2014)

I had some trouble initially activating my grains because I was using non-homogenized milk. (The grains got caught up in the cream layer as it separated. I should have been more vigilant about stirring). Anita with customer service was very helpful (and patient!) with all my questions and walked me through the process of fixing my situation. I now have a steady stream of kefir going and couldn't be happier! (Posted on April 11, 2014)

We have really enjoyed our Kefir so far. The directions were clear and easy to follow. The grains activated in only 2 days, and we were in business. The grains almost work too well, we are going through so much milk now, BUT, I am loving having an awesome fermented snack each afternoon. Since the grains activated so quickly, I needed costumer service help when I found a completely set up jar of milk. The service team was great, and told me exactly what to do to correct the situation. Kefir is so easy, it is a great culture to start out with if you are new to fermenting foods at home! Delivery quick and product arrived as advertised. Follow all steps to activate my kefir grains. However, by end of first week I don't know what I did wrong - everything was clumped up like curds & whey - I couldn't find my kefir grains! Fed all to chickens. Would like to start again but, hesitant because I don't know what I did wrong and don't want to spend money on something I can't use properly.

p.s. My husband and I love kefir - we were so excited to try and make our own.

Response from CFH: Maintain a maximum of 3 teaspoons grains in up to 1 quart milk, to avoid over-culturing. Please contact customer support for troubleshooting advice before discarding anything. Many cultures can be saved with minor adjustments. (Posted on February 10, 2014)

My milk kefir starter kit arrived very fast----much faster than any of my amazon orders! Everything about it worked well for me---the simple yet elegant and professional packaging, the easy to navigate instruction booklet, and the clearly labeled grains themselves. Rehydrating the grains went smoothly per the instructions. I contacted customer service several times for answers to various questions that came up and received courteous, prompt, and informative replies. I didn't have any trouble with the grains doing their work as a culture. I did use a reptile heat mat because my house is so cool in the winter. The idea for the heat mat came from customer service and was a life saver for the entire project! (Posted on February 7, 2014)

This set does make really good kefir. However, I am a little disappointed with the extremely small size of the kefir grains. They do work though - it's just tedious to make sure you don't lose grains in the straining process. I've only and them about 3 weeks and am hoping they get bigger as time passes. The strainer is very small, I have a larger one ready to buy now. The cotton bag is still in the original wrapper unused - maybe I will use it for something sometime. All in all I'm glad I bought these because they do work but mostly glad I got them from this company for the wonderful help they provide via chat. (Posted on February 7, 2014)

I didn't know what to do with all the kefir I started getting, so I made the cheese. The cheese is unbelievably good. I spread some on toast with a topping of a little marmalade, and I'm good until lunchtime. I also add a tablespoon of the cheese to eggs for scrambled eggs -- makes them really fluffy and rich. We have loved our kefir grains! They were rehydrated within four days and were producing a quart of kefir every cycle. I think we could have done even more. The taste is great! No complaints here! (Posted on February 3, 2014)
