Milk kefir grains are live active cultures consisting of yeast and bacteria existing in a symbiotic relationship. Adding the kefir grains to fresh milk yields a delicous probiotic drink in about 24 hours. Milk kefir can be enjoyed plain, flavored, or used in many recipes, like salad dressing, bread, and ice cream.

  • Rehydration period of 3-7 days required before regular use.
  • Reusable culture; makes up to 1 quart of kefir with every batch
  • Cultures on the counter at 68°-85°F
  • Suitable for use with cow or goat milk.
  • Grains require rehydration in pasteurized dairy milk. Once rehydrated, grains may be transitioned to raw milk.
  • May be used to culture coconut, soy, or rice milk once rehydrated in dairy milk; grains require regular refreshing in dairy milk.
  • Nut and seed milks yield inconsistent results.

Why I Love This Product

Making milk kefir is easy, simple, and fruitful... when you have good kefir grains. I have been making milk kefir for our family for years and have sourced kefir grains both from Cultures for Health and from friends who had gotten them from a friend who had gotten them from a friend. The Cultures for Health milk kefir grains have worked wonderfully every time... as long as I took proper care of them. At one point I was unable to get my grains to multiply or grow in size, but soon discovered that our kitchen was much too cold for them to thrive. With some changes, the grains became active and began to multiply with fervor. If it weren't for my own forgetfulness, I believe these grains could last a lifetime.     • I'd like to use the Kefir Grains for raw goat's milk. When I get them, can I rehydrate them in raw goat's milk so they will work better when I make my first batch?
    • You can rehydrate your grains in goat milk but you must pasteurize the milk until the grains are producing good kefir. Plan on a few weeks of pasteurizing your raw milk, being sure it has completely cooled to room temp or lower before adding the grains, as temps above 85ºF will damage the grains.     • Yes, your finished milk kefir can be stored in the fridge for 2-3 weeks and enjoyed cold.

    • If culturing coconut milk, how often do the grains need to be put back into dairy milk? My instructions just say occasionally, but I wasn't sure what exactly that meant. Every few weeks? Every few months?

      Also, does this apply only to canned coconut milk? Or can we used coconut milk in cartons such as So Delicious Coconut Milk? If canned only, should it be full fat only, or will light work too?

      Finally, can you culture other milks such as almond milk with kefir grains?

      Sorry for all the questions. I've been making kefir successfully using dairy milk for a few weeks now and wanted to try coconut milk, but I don't want to mess anything up!
    • You should put the grains back into dairy milk every few batches. The grains need dairy milk for nourishment. You can also culture other milks using milk grains, but the natural food for grains is dairy milk.

      Any coconut milk you choose should have little to no additives in it. Guar gum does not appear to be a problem.

      Nut milks do not work well with milk kefir grains, and likely would culture poorly if at all. It would be best to wait until you have extra grains to experiment with.

    • I am new to this and so excited about your website. I see you ship dehydrated real kefir grains. Does the process of dehydrating the grain kill off any of the microbial strains in the grains? Thanks so much, Sara.

    • How much of the kefir grains comes in this starter package?

    • I just bought the milk kefir grain but I am going abroad for one month. Is there a way to keep them alive while I am away for one month?
    • The best way to keep them alive would be to put them in the refrigerator in milk and ask a neighbor to change the milk once every 3 weeks, although once a week is better. If that isn't possible, you will need to dehydrate your grains and rehydrate them again when you get back.     • There is a small quantity of grains in the package that generally rehydrate to about 1 tsp. This quantity is enough to culture up to 1 quart of milk. The grains, when used with care, may grow and should be divided when doubling in quantity to culture a second quart or share with friends.     • What kind of coconut milk should I use for making coconut kefir? Should I use Thai coconut milk in a can or should I use the coconut milk in the milk carton?
    • To make coconut milk kefir, use fresh homemade, canned or boxed coconut milk. We do recommend avoiding brands with additives and sweeteners as they can be hard on the kefir grains. Guar gum which is a typical additive does not seem to be problematic.

The grains shipped quickly and I had no trouble getting it to start up. I've only been making milk kefir for 12 days now and it's going very well. Sometimes too well. My kefir was getting made too quickly for the amount that I wanted to drink. And it tended to be too thick since the organic dairy I was using has all Jersey cows who make very creamy milk. So I switched to 2% milk of theirs and put the culture for a time in a 60 degree room to slow it down a little and now it's going fine for me. I easily get two pints a day and have started drinking more kefir. I like it with vanilla and stevia in it. My stomach likes it better than the yogurt I had been eating every day. The support is top-flight. Very easy to get help which I've done twice now. Wonderful company.

A quality product and the instructions were simple. My grains performed well after a few days. I'm single and had to put them on "vacation" for a few days because I couldn't consume that much kefir! But, it's been a fun and wonderful experience. I'm just learning and am sure I'll make kefir for a long time to come. Good product and worth the price.

This kit is a great place to start. I have been buying kefir for my kids for 2 years because my son wouldn't drink milk. I have now been making my own kefir and flavoring it with blueberry juice and a little maple syrup. I love how easy it is and my kids love it. I barely get any, because they ask for as I am straining out the grains. The grains are doing very well after 4 or 5 days of re-hydrating. We now do 3 cups of milk every 24 hours.

it took me about 5 days to activate the grains, now that they are active, i am drinking it almost every day.

What I have seen is that you better start small, meaning that it's not good to start fermenting 4 cups right after the activation, I've been doing 1.5 cups every time, and it's been the best way for me.

The 4 cup thing hasn't worked that well for me, I guess you need the grains to be more plentiful, and then to try the 4 cup at once.

Response from CFH: We include enough milk kefir grains to culture up to 4 cups of milk once the grains are fully activated. Please contact Customer Support for troubleshooting assistance before discarding any products.

Only one suggestion. We travel and it's really difficult to take the kefir with us. What can we do to preserve it (not kill it) if we are going to be gone a few days. Can I put it in the refrigerator to slow it down or do I just get a "babysitter"?

This starter kit is amazing. I've been making my own Kefir all month and I can't believe I was paying so much for store bought Kefir. Then last week I read an article that outlined that the claims on the brand of Kefir I had been buying for years were inaccurate. Within 3 days of the grains arriving, I had amazing kefir by the quart. The included instructions and videos on the site are invaluable. You just have to really try to mess this process up. I like to let it go longer occasionally as the curds & whey are amazing too. Such a versatile product. I never dreamed you could do this with homogenized/pasteurized milk. a great product with exceptional support staff. this culture is pretty forgiving so just use some common sense and go for it. if you feel like you're becoming a slave to it just throw it in the fridge for a bit then pick up where you left off later. also, i've had great results w/ ultra pasteurized milk as this is the only kind i can find in my area. cheers and thanks to CfH for a great product and support.

Noe from CFH: Ultra Pasteurized is not recommended as it may not culture consistently. Contact customer support for help choosing ingredients for culturing.

My kefir grains "awakened" without a hitch and are now producing kefir beautifully! I am enjoying trying different ingredients in "second ferments" and making kefir smoothies with various ingredients. I called with questions on one occasion, and your rep gave me much valuable information. With all the written and video helps you provide, I don't see how you can go wrong! Yes, the initial price is costly, but it will pay for itself in no time as you can continue culturing indefinitely if you like. You can make up to a quart of kefir daily if you choose. Highly recommended product and service.

I am a newbie to kefir making. The grains reactivated within three days and have been very active! Making kefir in large batches within about 18 hours. Very healthy grains. The included strainer is perfect. I found the book helpful as well. Very pleased with my purchase.

I started drinking kefir over a year ago and was pleased with the difference it made for me. Then my local store stopped stocking it, which was the ultimate blessing in disguise. After researching online, I ordered the kit from Cultures for Health (I love your website!). I am completely satisfied with my milk kefir starter kit. Was a little worried when I saw the small amount of kefir grains but there was no need to worry as it worked wonderfully. I was able to work up to 4cups quickly. I have since been able to switch over to raw goat milk with no problems and now consistently make kefir every day for my husband and I.
