Milk kefir grains are live active cultures consisting of yeast and bacteria existing in a symbiotic relationship. Why I Love This Product

Making milk kefir is easy, simple, and fruitful... when you have good kefir grains. I have been making milk kefir for our family for years and have sourced kefir grains both from Cultures for Health and from friends who had gotten them from a friend who had gotten them from a friend. The Cultures for Health milk kefir grains have worked wonderfully every time... as long as I took proper care of them. At one point I was unable to get my grains to multiply or grow in size, but soon discovered that our kitchen was much too cold for them to thrive. With some changes, the grains became active and began to multiply with fervor. If it weren't for my own forgetfulness, I believe these grains could last a lifetime. • Hi,

I am new to making my own milk kefir. I can only find ultra-pasteurized organic milk in the grocery stores here. Is that ok? Can kefir be made from fat-free milk or is that not advisable? Thanks, B
    • Ultrapasteurized milk can be too sterile for the kefir grains, and using it gives unreliable results. They may be able to make kefir for a while, but eventually they are likely to weaken for lack of nourishment. You may be able to have your grocery store order some regular pasteurized milk for you. Fat-free milk is acceptable, but will make a thinner kefir.

    • Does this kefir have lactose in it once it's made? I know the kefir I buy at the store says it's 99% lactose free, and I didn't know if that was all kefir or just theirs. Thanks, Amina
    • The amount of lactose in the finished kefir will depend on how long you culture it. The longer it cultures, the less lactose will be in it. There is no nutritional information we have on homemade cultured products due to all the influential variables!

    • Can you make kefir with instant non-fat dry milk? Thank you.
    • You could probably culture a batch of instant non-fat dry milk with kefir grains, but the grains would not survive well as the dry milk is usually very highly processed, and does not provide a lot of nutrients for the grains to grow and reproduce.

    • Can you use this kefir starter set with coconut milk instead of cow's milk?
    • Yes, however the grains must be rehydrated using dairy milk. After rehydration, and several successful batches in dairy milk, you can put them into coconut milk. The grains will survive and culture coconut milk, but they will need to be revitalized in dairy milk every few batches.

    • Oh no! I was rehydrating my kefir grains and accidentally used a metal spoon. Have I ruined them? They have not started making proper kefir yet, and I am not sure what they are supposed to be doing at this point in the process. Can you tell me how sensitive they are to this sort of mistake? Thanks.
    • The grains are probably ok, especially if the spoon is stainless steel. Brief contact with the metal will likely not harm them. Continue with the rehydration process and contact customer service if you have further problems.

    • I want to make my own kefir at home, but my family doesn't consume enough to make a new batch every 24-24 hours. We usually go through 1 qt a week.

What do you do with the grains in between batches?
    • We strongly discourage frequent breaks from making kefir, for the health of the grains. However, if needed, you can put the grains in a cup of milk, put a lid on top, and leave them in the refrigerator. They will be good for 3 weeks. If you can do a milk change at 3 weeks, you can then store them another 3 weeks. They must get back to work after this break, or you risk damaging them.

    • Hello! I wanted to know if it's okay to use real silver spoons (not stainless steel) with the kefir. If not, I suppose wood would be okay? Thank you!
    • Silver has anti-microbial properties and shouldn't be used with your grains. Stainless steel is fine but when in doubt, go with the wooden spoons!

    • In the instructions for rehydrating kefir grains: Can I use 1/4 or 1/2 cup fresh milk to rehydrate kefir grains instead of one cup as indicated in the instructions? If idea to submerge kefir grains completely in the milk, I think 1/4 or maximum 1/2 cup is more than sufficient. Why waste one cup of fresh milk? Let me know.
    • We recommend using 1 cup of milk to rehydrate the grains. As the grains rehydrate, you are also providing food for them. 1/4 cup of milk would not be enough to feed the grains and keep them healthy.

Easy! Better than yogurt! Review by Willow

At least I think so (that it's better than yogurt). The "grains" were not something I was expecting. But after they're completely hydrated, they're easy to find and take out for tomorrow's kefir. I like how fresh this product is. Want to try making the kefir cheese--just have been too busy at the moment.

I think I've been successful as a coworker said mine was better than what's offered in the store. I'm still a little concerned that I'm doing the right thing. I agree with the review that stated there wasn't much info in the guide as to WHAT to look for. I am very thrilled to be making something healthy so I appreciate the company. I definitely recommend Cultures for Health!

Love my milk kefir Review by Lynn

I have never heard of milk kefir until I was doing research. I ordered some kefir grains and within 3 days I had milk kefir. I had no idea what I was doing when I started making it, but I am now in love with my milk kefir. I use organic raw cows milk, and love that I control what goes into it or does not go into it. Thanks Cultures for Health! I will be a customer for life. I want to try cheese next.

Enjoying it every day Review by Dennis

I have a yellow Lab (Daisey) who has allergies. Daisey & I each have a cup of Kefir every day. Mine is in a fruit & veg. smoothie, hers is mixed with rice and whatever leftovers we have. Her allergies do seem to be much improved as well as my digestion. The 2% organic pasteurized milk is a bargain in that a gallon lasts us 8 days for $6. You can't get that much nutrition for quadruple that amount.

CFH note ~ We're happy to hear that Daisey is enjoying her kefir too! For other pet owners, please check with your vet, kefir may be appropriate for some pets.

I had just started drinking store bought kefir and read about the benefits of making your own. I've never done anything like this before but thought I would give it a try. I received my order very fast and started making it right away. I can tell a total difference from the store bought I feel I am getting more benefits from my own and it's definitely saving me lots of money. So happy I decided to try this!

Do Not Give Up activating the culture, even if you think it is not working Review by Arizona
Quality

Value

At first, I had a hard time finding the tiny grains in the porridge like consistency of the curds. Living in Arizona my house is warm so I had to increase the amount of cold milk and watch it closely to avoid the milk separating into curds and whey. After 7 days, I think I've got it. My kefir is now perfect. I love it best ice cold in a chilled drinking glass. So glad I was patient and persistence in activating the grains.

Strange title I know. The reason is that I wish I had the time to this properly. Evidently, my home is perfect for culturing this. So perfect that I need to check it every 6 hours or it goes straight to curds and whey. I work 2nd shift so most of my time is working, sleeping and eating. I will order more starter grains when my life slows down and I can do this right. Check out my review for water kefir. A bit different. I will be back for more.

Note from CFH: Please contact Customer Support before discarding any cultures. Many cultures can be saved with minor adjustments.

This is my first Kefir purchase and I am impressed with the product, the information and video instructions available on line. All has gone well, they rehydrated well and I've been enjoying the finished Kefir. My only complaint was the shipping cost. There has to be a better way, it was close to twice the price of the product!

Response from CFH: We must ship to Canada by Expedited Shipping, so it can be pricey. We do offer retail locations in Canada. Some of our retail locations may be willing to ship to you. Here is the map that lists those locations: http://www.culturesforhealth.com/ustorelocator/location/map

i am so glad i got this kit - so nice to have a dedicated strainer only for the kefir - i never have to go looking for it...
At first i was really wondering if this was going to work, but it really did take about a week for the kefir packet to rehydrate and start growing and actually making the kefir.
Now it is like having an enthusiastic pet ~ every day a new jar of kefir and at first i thought whoah, when am i going to eat all this? then realized oh ya, let it rest in milk (changed often) in the fridge til i catch up with stuffing my face...
I tell you my gut is SOOOOO HAPPY!... who knew? i used to think yogurt was healthy, but i tell you my gut loves the kefir waayyyyy more.... i notice i have stayed healthier as well this winter since eating kefir daily as well ( my fav is putting frozen orange juice concentrate in - tastes like creamsicles - i may never eat ice cream again!) also chop in some fruit).... so good!!

Great product - Excellent customer service Review by Jon

I got my first kefir grains in the mail and started the re-hydration process. After 7 days of not working I thought that the room I was keeping it in was too cold so I moved it to a smaller room where I could increase the heat. Unfortunately it died a horrible death at the hands of a nasty invasive bacteria or yeast. I contacted customer support and they walked me through some possible problems and I discovered that the kefir was too near a couple of potted plants on the shelf with it in the new space and that is where the invaders must have come from. Within 2 days of getting new grains and following their suggestions I had delicious kefir! Now several weeks later I am still getting a new batch about every 12 hours, making kefir cheeses and smoothies too! Great product and a pleasure to work with the people at C for H!

I ordered my kit about a month or so ago and in about 3 days was making smooth, creamy kefir. Now I not only drink it straight-- delish! but make kefir cheese, ice cream and use it as a starter for my homemade whole grain bread. Can you tell I am a satisfied customer? I love dealing with CFH because they have awesome products and great customer service!

Easy-peasy! That's what I like! TWO days to "AWAKE them"-then off to the races!
The nuances of flavor are superior to bottled commercial product, plus no pectin, which by itself is not bad but-HEY! this is milk not jelly. I like the effervescence ...try it on fresh raspberries!

Love this Kefir Review by Kev

When I first discovered Kefir in the grocery store I thought it was expensive but I knew I needed probiotics. I was doing a lot of reading on Pinterest about real foods and some articles on Kefir. I also subscribed to some blog emails and read them for a while before I decided to try making Kefir at home. The instructive videos made it look very easy and store bought can get expensive.
I've been keeping to the basic formula but want to try some variety. The benefits I've noticed from using home made Kefir are well worth all the reading and watching videos. Thanks for making the purchase so affordable and simple.

Very vigorous culture Review by Loreli Reese

I picked Cultures for Health over less expensive options because I figured I would be paying for quality backed up by customer service and reputation. I liked the quality of the information given and the patience of the staff in chat.

I was not disappointed. I was worried that my culture might not thrive, but quickly it activated to the point that I needed to back up my grains, as I couldn't afford to buy that much milk every day. Within a month and a half a good 3/4 of my purchased grains needed to be dried for backup, and just one small and very active grain thickens six cups of kefir very well every 24 hours. Awesome.

I have been using the milk kefir grains for about a month now. I use 1% organic milk and the kefir tastes great. My husband makes kefir smoothies every morning, I use it to replace buttermilk in recipes(bread, pancakes). I have also been hanging it to separate the whey (breadmaking) and use the thickened kefir like sour cream. We use about 3 quarts a week of kefir a week. I have already shared grains with a friend. Thanks for a great product!

Dead grains on arrival Review by Lew

I have used Kefir grains in the past, and since Cultures 4 health had very good reviews, I thought I would give them a try. After two weeks of attempting to wake up my grains, I contacted customer service(CS). I exchanged four emails with CS, and sent pics of my horrible looking grains. CS sent me a replies of advice already contained in the instructions, which I followed, yet all I wanted was a set of replacement grains. After my 3rd week of dead grains, and no movement from CS to replace them, I decided to buy from another company. Those kefir grains are thriving.

Note from CFH: Cultures can nearly always be saved with some minor adjustments. We stand behind all of our products 100%. Please contact customer support for assistance.

Before purchasing the Milk Starter Kit I watched the "How to" videos and read the "How to" information links provided on the Cultures for Health website. I purchased the proper milk, and whatever else I needed. When the kit was on it's way to my home I got a little nervous, being my first attempt at fermenting so I used the easy "Leave a Message" service at the bottom of the screen to ask additional questions. I was helped immediately. I was making more of a fuss than the project called for :) The kit arrived right on time. I put everything together following the easy instructions and we enjoy delicious kefir every morning. It's been a great and rewarding experience. Thank you Cultures for Health.
