Additional Details About Milk Kefir Grains (MKG)

Milk kefir grains are live active cultures consisting of yeast and bacteria existing in a symbiotic relationship. Milk kefir grains need to be rehydrated using pasteurized dairy milk (not raw milk) before regular use. Once milk kefir grains are rehydrated, they can be transitioned to raw milk. Milk kefir grains can be used to culture coconut, soy, or rice milk once rehydrated, but must be rehydrated in dairy milk first. Milk kefir grains require regular refreshing in fresh dairy milk (as soon as the texture changes.)

Why I Love This Product

Milk kefir is my favorite fermented food! It is so easy to make. Every 2 days or so I spend 5 minutes straining and pouring the milk on top of my grains. My kids love it (especially mixed with a little honey). Because the milk kefir grains are reusable, they are an easy inexpensive way to make kefir forever! This is a perfect starter culture for anyone just starting out making their own fermented foods, or for families with only a little time on their hands! Want to know more about culturing milk kefir? Here are some of our blog posts about milk kefir!

I've made kefir for years with the same granules. It makes thicker naturally in cooler weather. Just to have these excellent granules available at all and at this price is marvelous.

I want to respond to Brad who said that his granules were not growing in size or numbers. I got some granules many years ago. I have given away tons over the years as they grow so fast. One year mine quit growing and got smaller so I talked to an informed person who said that no doubt there were antitbiotics in the milk. We called the goat feed company. Sure enough they had changed the feed and were putting antibiotics in the feed without revealing it on the label. We changed feed and they began growing again. Something is wrong, Brad, and it is probably not the granules. So see if you can find out what. One test is to put only half and half or pure cream on them. They will almost grow before your eyes. So if that works, then you know it is the milk or the way you rinse them or something. Hope this helps.

Even better than I anticipated! Within a week I have been able to make 2 cups of perfectly delicious kefir in 12 hours. This method produces kefir that is MUCH better-tasting and more economical than buying the storebought kind each week. Your milk kefir grains are amazingly potent when kept in a warm area!! THANK YOU!! I have been keeping my kefir in a dark, enclosed area (next to a laundry basket in a corner) with an oil heater to keep it warm (my house is too cold, around 60-65 degrees).

My only regret is that I didn't buy these kefir grains sooner!

I will admit...I was a bit scared away for a minute due to the higher price compared to those that I saw on amazon.com. But as we know, higher priced often means better quality. I purchased the kefir grains and within 4 days I recieved my product. The first 24 hours I had healthy and beautiful grains and was quite pleased!!

Yes, if you want a reliable kefir product, this is definitely the one to order. We ordered ours in March of this year and have had an unending supply of high quality kefir ever since, and we are now going on eight weeks of culturing it again and again. It has been worth every penny we spent on it.

The grains are alive and well. My only disappointment was that it could only make a small amount of kefir. [Note from CFH: The milk kefir grains can be re-used indefinitely to make large quantities of milk kefir, but it may take some time for the grains to multiply sufficiently to make more than a quart at one time.]

I have had my Kefir grains for several months and I absolutely love them. I use whole organic milk from my local grocery store and have not had one problem. I use a clean quart jar every day with a coffee filter and rubber band. Cheap! When I am tired or have too much stored, I simply place in the fridge for a few days with a cup of milk. This really requires minimal maintenance making it easier than I every imagined. My husband had been drinking Kefir from the store for years and he is very pleased that I am making it at home now. Go ahead and buy the kit because the strainer is a must-have for optimal results. I immediately wash my strainer after each use or it is almost impossible to clean after lying in the sink.

I was a little skeptical of this whole kefir business, but in an attempt to create a healthier gut due to some health problems, I gave it a try. This product works exactly like it says it will. I followed the directions and within a couple of weeks, my grains were growing well. I hae been able to pass along grains to others due to growth. I drink my kefir unflavored (which is an acquired taste) and add it to smoothies for the kids. I have been making kefir from this starter for almost a year now! I would definitely recommend this product.

I've been lactose sensitive since a child. We drank milk three meals a day every day and my stomach hurt all the time. My parents took me to the doctor and they said it was all in my head. I gave up drinking milk in college and now at 50+ found kefir. I have a large glass every morning. My stomach doesn't hurt. My nails and hair are stronger and look better. I feel myself getting healthier and healthier by the day. This product was easy to purchase, quick to arrive and had clear directions. I wasn't pleased with the first few batches. I thought they tasted off, but as it's aged, it has improved and now I love it.

I had never tried kefir before getting these, but I've become addicted to the idea and the tartness. I've been alternating between whole cow's milk and almond milk. My tiny two grains haven't grown much in the month that I've had them, but they did survive a week of sitting in the frig in milk while we were away for Christmas. At this point I think I'm going to stop using them with the almond milk to see if that helps them beef up a little. I've also gotten help from the LiveChat that makes me feel there's always someone to ask a question of. It's a great benefit! I drink mine plain a couple of times a day.

The kefir grains arrived quickly after I placed the order for them. i was fully expecting it to take more than five days to rehydrate, but, by day three I had kefir :)

I do keep a thermometer in the kitchen, and after moving the jar a couple of times, found a spot that stays at 72°consistently. At first I placed the jar on a warming mat I keep on the counter for soaking/sprouting buckwheat groats, but was worried it might be too warm,I kept checking with a candy thermometer and it was right at 85° when set on the mat.

The grains were activated in reconstituted powdered goats milk, (also checked with a candy thermometer after mixing with warm water) and I think maybe the fact that the milk was warmer than refrigerated when grains first went in, contributed to the speed that they began to begin working.

I've since switched to raw goats milk, poured straight from the refrigerator, as using warmer milk was making kefir in about 17 hours, which was not all that convenient.

We have really enjoyed our kefir from Cultures for Health! I make a batch daily and either mix it with natural fruit jam or make it into smoothies with frozen fruit. We've also used it for making salad dressing and kefir cream cheese. I have a very busy schedule but the kefir is so easy to keep up with and I have found it much more convenient than making yogurt.

At first I was disappointed and thought that either I was doing something wrong or my grains were just "not right." I contacted the oh-so-patient customer service reps so many times when I first started kefering that I started feeling a little on the kefir-challanged side. But, at last, with patience and good advice, I am now a kefir making mama! The grains are very forgiving and are now, about 5-6 weeks later, growing every day! I now make a quart of kefir each day and it is so very thick, just like I like it! The step I changed is actually mentioned not to be necessary, but it made all the difference in the world for me. After each batch of kefir I make, I thoroughly rinse my grains with cool water before adding the next quart of milk. Before doing this my kefir was runny and just not thick at all. Now, it's thick like a milkshake. And so good! I am very happy with the purchase and would definitely recommend CFH to everyone! I am going to be ordering more products, as the customer service is outstanding and the prices are great, also!

I ordered my first milk kefir grains two years ago. I was living in Central America so I had them shipped to a friend in the US who then sent them to me. I was not sure they would survive the long, hot journey. But not only did they survive the journey, they re-hydrated and produced real kefir in less than 48 hours! I was very sick at the time and very grateful to have them. The grains from this company are so incredibly healthy that they lost a customer. I don't need to buy anymore because my grains reproduce like crazy even after relocating them to my new home in the Middle East. I love this company and return to the website regularly. Though I have not needed to make a second purchase, I am a probiotic-evangelist so I send people to this sight regularly.

The shipped grains re-hydrated quickly and easily.

The Cultures for Health grains are very active. 1/2 tsp of my grains cultures a cup of milk in less than 24 hours. I keep discarding grains, but it doesn't slow it down! It's like a hungry pet that wants to eat all the milk in the house!

The grains make more kefir than I can drink so 3 months ago, I put the grains (in kefir, so not a lot of food for them) into the fridge and left it there. I assumed they were dead, but I started to feel bad and decided to revive them. They're alive! After a few not-quite-right batches, they're just as active and tasty as they were before the neglect.

    Kefir is amazing stuff!

After almost 2 months of kefir making, our grains have grown into these beautiful pearls! It took us about 2 weeks to start making perfect kefir, but once the grains were rehydrated and ready to go, we were quickly making a quart a day, and now make 1/2 gallon every 1.5 days. At first the grains remained pretty small (almost so much that we couldn't tell where they were!), but still we were getting delicious kefir. After some patience, as I mentioned above, the grains have grown happily.

I purchased Milk Kefir Grains from Cultures for Health several months ago. After two weeks of trying to get them to culture, I got frustrated and threw them out. (Looking back, I'm pretty positive it was my own ignorance. The grains were simply over-culturing and I didn't know what I was looking at, nor did I ask the wonderful people in customer service for help.)

Fast forward to now, and Cultures for Health contacted me and sent me another package of Milk Kefir Grains. In addition, they also sent me a generous amount of additional information on how to culture the Milk Kefir, what to look for, etc. I was amazed at their generosity, patience with me, and willingness to help in any way possible. My milk Kefir grains are now flourishing and have grown enough already for me to share with family! I would recommend this company to anyone (and I do!).

As with many of the other reviews, I expected about 4-6 days to rehydrate the grains, but was getting kefir in 2! In fact, with the whole milk, it separated into curds/whey after a 24 hour ferment period. I'm now using 2% organic cow's milk and straining after 24 hours for a 'buttermilk' consistency. My grains are still pretty small, after nearly 3 weeks. I'm getting about a quart per day of kefir. I would recommend getting 2 of the bigger plastic strainers, and make sure you have lots of clean mason jars. I've been fermenting the kefir inside a crock in the kitchen, about 70 degrees. I use it for smoothies, baking, and drinking plain with cracked pepper. Love it!

As someone stated above, I wish I had gotten the plastic strainer before I started trying to set up the grains. I ended up losing some of them b/c of the straining problem. I have since been able to bring them back, but at a much slower rate. I also noticed the change in the grains when I was forced to use regular milk, when Organic milk wasn't available. I'm a bit nervous about summer coming around, it's like the Trebles from Star Trek, they keep multiplying in warm conditions! "LOL" I'm happy I tried this product, and when I had concerns they were able to assist me.

My kefir grains are happy and making me happy and healthy. I make better kefir with these grains than the kefir I buy in the store, for double or triple the price. My kefir is tangy and rich. Sometimes I put it on a heating pad, and I think it likes that. It's the kind of heating pad you keep on all day under an aquarium with heat-loving lizards. I highly recommend this product. I was worried that it wouldn't work with pasteurized milk. (Previously I had my own raw goat milk and there's a noticeable difference between raw and pasteurized milk kefir) I had tried it twice before with pasteurized but I think I gave up too early. The staff at Cultures for Health were so positive in their answers that I stuck with it, and now have wonderful kefir. I just used it to make bread with also. It's bubbly and tastes really good although I added a tsp of sugar to the finished kefir.

When I researched Kefir grains, I was expecting to receive something that would rehydrate to the size of small cauliflower pieces. This is what was shown in many of the demonstrational videos that I had found. When my package arrived, I was shocked and disappointed to find very small grains about the size of quinoa. When fully rehydrated there were still none bigger than a pencil eraser. Given a week and a half of careful tending and replacement of milk, they are still no bigger; but are producing wonderful tasting Kefir on a daily basis. We have used it to make smoothies, yogurt, and cream cheese. So despite it not being what I expected, I am very pleased with this product.

I have been culturing with my new grains for several weeks. Although I a getting a thick creamy kefir after 24 hours the curds do not seem to be growing and I can barely find them when I strain the kefir. After putting the final product in the refrigerator it seperates and becomes much thinner than when I first placed it in the refrigerator.

The grains arrived in a timely manner and were rehydrated in 4-5 days. Since then, I've been trying to find a warm enough spot in my chilly house to get anything to happen. I just tried putting the milk on a seedling heat pad, which worked so well I overshot the kefir and ended up with curds. But I'm on the right track and I have high hopes for my first kefir in the next day or two. I take full personal responsibility for this, as these are my first kefir grains!

We are really happy with our kefir grains from Cultures for Health,it came really fast in the mail and as the instructions explained we had kefir every day after the fourth day of rehydration period. We accidently cooked our first grains since I was putting overnight in the oven (off) . The second time we bought our grains worked even better than the first, might be cause it seamed to have more in the package. We Love it!

Bought the grains and had never used dried grains before so was a little concerned about the "reawakening" process. I used organic whole milk and was making kefir in four days! My house isn't terribly warm so I was concerned about whether I'd have to find a warmer spot than the kitchen counter. I've now switched to organic 2% milk and have a fresh batch of creamy goodness every morning for my turmeric/honey smoothie. I've taken a few days off while I was away and placing them into the fridge did not slow them down or stop them from working when I got home. I tried using raw milk and the outcome wasn't nearly as successful. Not sure of the issue there. I am VERY pleased with this item. Looking forward to fermenting some veggies and making kombucha, also!

Much more effective than what we tried to purchase at a local health store. The grains took about 1 wk to become fully active (enough for a good teaspoon). I'm experimenting with coconut milk because of some dairy issues. The coconut milk tends to be less thicker/creamier than the milk, but works great in my morning smoothie.

I am very happy with the results I've gotten so far. It took me a little while to find the right place for it to grow best, but I am now making whole milk Kefir 4 days a week and soy kefir 2-3 times a week. I grew up watching my Mom make yogurt and eating fresh yogurt, so I was very confident about being able to do this, and I can't believe that I had not looked into getting these cultures before. About a year and a half ago, I bought a yogurt maker and I loved it!! The fresh taste brought back memories and I could not believe that I had eaten store bought this long. Then, while looking for the starter, I found this website and of course, I had to try it. For those of you who are new to this whole process, read, read read the book and it may take a lot more trial and error on the spot where your cultures are going to do their best, but stay with it and your perseverance will be rewarded. I would recommend you use a thermometer to make sure the temperature is where you need it to be. My Keffir grains were producing thick Kefir within 4 days and started to multiply and grow so fast I could not believe it. Then, it all came to a hult. The milk was barely thick after a whole 24 hours and the grains were getting smaller and dissapearing :( until I realized that the dishwasher was not running as often as it had when I first started! Now, I have found the top of the stove is the best place because the temperature is constant, since the pilot keeps it warm. In addition, when the dishwasher is set to run at night, I use a plastic dish. When the dishwasher runs during the day, I use a glass dish.
I make whole milk Kefir 4 out of 3 days a week, and Soy Kefir the other 3 days. I find that soy thickens much faster than whole milk. My grains are back to bigger and I am better at figuring how much milk they need. My next test is going to be drying the grains and rehydrating them for when I go on vacation. The support is incredible by chat or email, I found the staff was extremely helpful and all the posts were very helpful too. Happy culturing everyone :)

Love the keifer. The grains were easy to use. Separating the scoby out took some figuring to do it without making a big mess. The little strainer was too little. I tried rinsing the scoby for the next batch - didn't work that well. Finally just used a bigger plastic sprout strainer that screws on a wide mouth canning jar and left the thick stuff with some of the keifer, transferred it to a clean jar and went on. Also more finely strain the drinkable keifer cause there are smaller grains in it that get through the bigger holes.
Well worth the effort to customize the process to the individual. My husband and I never want to be without keifer again!

My first attempt with these did not go so well for two reasons. One is that I didn't buy the starter kit with the plastic strainer and as a result I think I actually strained out the grains within a few days. Also the weather was a little cold then (I live in FL) and I did not keep them warm enough at night. But customer service was AWESOME, helped me through it, and they worked beautifully. They are so productive I am having a hard time keeping up!

I received the grains in the powdered milk, and following the instructions, started my adventure in kefir.

The grains responded as the instructions said they would, the videos offered on the site showed everything, and was easy to understand and follow.

I had occasion to contact customer support and the folks were uniformly fast to answer, helpful, well-informed, and all around pleasant. All my questions were answered.

The additional information supplied by customer support was very helpful in my learning curve. Currently, my grains have just graduated to 3 cups of milk, and are making fabulous tasting kefir. Having tried the powdered starter for kefir before I got the grains, I can say that there is a marked taste difference, and the grains completely out-class the starter.

I was concerned a little at the beginning because I saw kefir grains advertised on Amazon at a quarter of the cost of this site, but the quality of the grains, the wealth of information and instruction and videos available, and the great customer service, taught me that I did in fact make the very best decision I could have made.

When the grains arrived, they were less than a teaspoon of dried grains and powdered milk. After the activation period where they got rehydrated and balanced, they became about a teaspoon of grains that don't look like the perfect little florets that the pictures show, but are plenty of quantity to make the quart of kefir, and they are little powerhouses. You don't actually need any more than that, so what they send is in fact the proper amount to make a quart of kefir each day.

The Kefir grains and instructions from Cultures for Health were great. It took a week or so to achieve the ideal consistency and flavor but the grains are producing very thick and creamy Kefir that tastes good. I have found that storing the Kefir in the refrigerator for a day or more further improves the flavor. When I had a question I was able to easily obtain help by phone. The Cultures for Health Kefir grains produce thicker, creamier and better tasting Kefir than the grains I first purchased from another website.

When the milk kefir grains arrived I had a question, so I got online and instantly connected through the chat line where a very kind and helpful soul answered my question. I followed the instructions exactly and have been drinking milk kefir every day since. It is easy to make and delicious. I use a pint-sized canning jar on my counter and make a fresh pint daily with non-homogenized milk from my local dairy. When I'm about to run out of milk I'll just place the grains in milk in the fridge until the milk arrives. I used to spend a lot of money buying milk kefir at the store and I much prefer this unsweetened, homemade version. It is so easy!

Really grooving on my kefir grains. Been using about a month. Make a quart at a time. Our kitchen is pretty warm so it matures pretty well. At first I would leave it in for 3-4 days to get maximum fermentation. Not a good idea because it probably stresses the grains without having fresh milk for so long. So now doing every 24 hours, but allowing the kefir to go through a second maturation.

When I drink this stuff it makes me feel good.

I've had the grains for about 2 months now. I'm very happy with them and they are producing wonderful tasting kefir like crazy.

The picture you see on the website, however, is not at all like what you get. I think the company does itself a disservice by having the picture it does, because it will throw a buyer off when they see what they get and what it looks like when it comes into production. You originally get a little less than a teaspoon of dried grains in powdered milk, which you then re-hydrate and prepare for production over the course of a week.

When the grains are ready and producing, you still don't have anything like the picture. you have got about a teaspoon of something that looks a lot like cottage cheese. Having seen the picture and thinking that is what you're supposed to have, I think it throws people off.

The thing is, that much will give you every bit of kefir you can possibly use and more. Mine is supplying me and my mom, both drinking kefir AND enough to keep us in kefir cheese, and I've got to find a way to slow these grains down!

They are amazing. Pay no attention to the picture that looks like you're getting a quarter or half cup of something that looks like cauliflower. First, if you did have that much in grains, you'd end up getting gallons of kefir a DAY - my teaspoon is giving me a quart every 16 hours or so. I do tend to let it go the whole 24 hours, but the kefir is thick and tasty that quickly.

And next, as the buyer, you expect your grains to look like that picture. They don't. This might confuse folks into thinking they were shorted on grains, or that the grains are insufficient or that something went wrong with them. Nope, that is what they're supposed to be. I can't imagine how long it would take for our grains to amount to that much. In the 2 months I've had mine, they haven't grown at all that I can tell, and quite honestly, given how much kefir my teaspoon makes, what in the world would I do with all the kefir that much would make?

So, to summarize, these grains are fabulous. They come back from the dried state quickly (4 days for me, and I went slowly and carefully), they produce kefir like crazy, and they look like a teaspoon of cottage cheese.

If you want tasty kefir, go for these grains.

We got our kefir grains (never saw such a thing before!) and fussed about getting them into milk that was warm enough (using a picnic cooler with jars of hot water and a thermometer) in our cold Maine farmhouse in early spring. They took about a week to work correctly, but then started making beautiful elegant-tasting kefir. The process went faster and faster as spring warmed up, so we moved the glass jar out onto our kitchen counter, which also kept going faster and faster! Before you knew it, we had a gallon of kefir lined up in the fridge — and have now had to move the "brewing" jar into the basement to slow it down. We've switched to kefir for hot and cold cereal "milk," breakfast smoothies, pancakes, raitas, and more — and are very happy with our purchase. Live strong!

Reviewing after an 8 day experience, including the rehydration period.

The day I started rehydrating coincided with a really hot weather wave for 2-3 days. The second and the third days the yield I had was a fermented product in a consistency of yoghurt, which tasted extremely good. By increasing the amount of fresh milk as suggested, I started to get fermented kefir in a drink consistency.

After 5-6 days, the little amount of grains I started with began to swell in size, which I hope grows bigger as many others experienced.

I'm really happy with the kefir grains. When they came, I was feeling anxious that I would not be able to get them to work. I followed the instructions exactly, and in about 5 days I began to make kefir. The small amount of grains that I got makes 1.5 cups of kefir in about 12 hours in my 77 degree house. I am looking for a cooler place in the house to store them, and plan to add more milk so that I can slow down the process a little.

Awhile back I had some grains that were so hard to use, never growing significantly and hard to strain out and reuse. I gave up for awhile, but missed this wonderfully probiotic drink so ordered these grains. Within 2 days they were making kefir. They have grown and multiplied, are easy to strain out of the finished product, and live happily on my counter in local raw milk from grassfed cows. I'm a fan!

We received our grains and followed instructions to rehydrate them. Now we are making 4 cups every day. My grains haven't grown but that has not stopped them from producing kefir. My husband and I and our two dogs drink the whole 4 cups daily. My husband has been teasing me about my "experiment" but he is now admitting that he feels so much better and our two dogs beg for kefir and are running around like young dogs. Their coats are nicer and their eyes brighter and they have more energy. The strange thing is that both my husband and I are lactose intolerant. These nifty little grains feed on the lactose and we have had no problem with the lactose at all. I am so happy that Cultures for Health offer these fantastic kefir grains. For the initial price along with the cost of milk, you can have a lifetime of healthy drink. We drink it straight, we put it in smoothies, we add fruits and juices. The possibilities are endless.

I got these grains a year ago. It took close to a week to activate them. I only used a little milk at first as it wasn't active yet and I didn't want to waste it. Once it got going, it tasted too sour for me but it's either gotten sweeter or I've gotten used to it. I always add a banana with tart fruit to make it sweet. Or a spoonful of fruit jam. The kefir has a almost tingly feeling on your tongue, there are some bubbles in it - that and the yeast makes it taste different from yogurt. Also the store bought kefir is not comparable as it is more of a thin yogurt. I had tried that first and if it wasn't for the other reviews and all the info these people provide I wouldn't have known it was supposed to taste so different.
Also, my house tends to stay warm, especially in the summer and I struggled with making this at first as it seemed to go from nothing to a super sour thick stuff that I didn't care for. Then I read a review from a lady in Houston who cycles hers daily with counter time and fridge time. I tried it and it works for me. I put it out until it looks a little thick, then fridge. Then I filter it and get it in new milk and back on the counter. I use organic milk. I could never get it through the sieve I bought here once it got thick. I started using one I got from Walmart that has bigger holes. Maybe if you filtered while it's still thin it would work, but I found this works ok.
And also, it never gets very thick, more like buttermilk. And whiter than the milk you start with when done. And then you put it through the sieve and that breaks it up thinner so I've mostly used it in smoothies and as a buttermilk substitute. Today I made one with a banana, teaspoon honey, fistful squished raw spinach and handful of frozen blueberries. It was good, too sweet, but couldn't taste the spinach. I have also made some salad dressing out of it, recipes on the website.

I wasn't sure about these grains when I started using them; I feel like it took several batches of milk for the grains to re-hydrate, but now I get delicious kefir. There is an article on this site about choosing the right milk for culturing, which was pretty helpful. I've decided that although I love to drink non-homogenized milk, I don't really like it cultured. The value of these grains is huge--a bottle of kefir is crazy expensive, and although good, organic milk is as well, it's not nearly as much as the finished product. I'm trying water kefir grains next.

The milk kefir grains I received from cultures for health have been extremely reliable and multiply quite quickly. They are definitely a good value because of the high price of store bought kefir. The only issue I have with them is that the kefir I get from them is "curdy". No matter what I do it never has the thick smooth texture of store bought kefir. It always comes out with very small curds throughout the thin kefir. Some of the best vegetable ferments I have made have been from extra kefir grains or kefir whey.

CFH Note~ The most common cause of a "grainy" texture (tiny curds in the kefir) is an imbalance in the ratio of kefir grains to milk. Removing some of the grains or increasing the volume of milk usually resolves the issue. Please contact Customer Support if you are having any problems, we are very happy to help.

I've been using Cultures for Health yogurt starter for a couple of years & wNted to try keifer. I wasn't sure if I'd like it or not, so I bought a bottle of strawberry keifer at the grocery store - I was hooked! Ordered my keifer grains and went to work! I had to experiment with milk fat levels, decided pure skim milk was not the best choice. Tried half skim/half whole milk - still not the best. Finally decided to go with whole milk, & haven't looked back! Have been experimenting with different flavors also. So far my very favorite is Pumpkin Spice Keifer (generous amount of pure pumpkin), dash or two of pumpkin pie spice, a splash of maple syrup &/or caramel sauce for depth of flavor, and a splash of organic evaporated cane juice to taste - DELICIOUS!! I've also made Green Tea Keifer using matcha powder & honey for sweetener, as well as various fruits made in the blender as keifer smoothies. Next up: Caramel Apple Keifer using unsweetened applesauce, a dollop of caramel sauce, and a dash of two of apple pie spice!!

Totally pleased with everything I've purchased from this company - excellent quality and wonderful customer service!!

I've had my first packet of grains going for about two weeks and they are growing fast and producing tasty kefir daily from whole pasteurized milk. I think they compare very well with 'live' or 'fresh' grains. Very satisfied.

Note from CFH: Our grains are alive, but dehydrated at low temperature and packaged in organic powdered milk to keep them healthy and fed. We dehydrate to keep the grains free from contaminants, and safe and stable for shipping.

This is my second try at this kefir product. The first time it did not work within 24 hrs, no matter what I did. It took like 45 hrs. Anyway, my husband built an incubator with a constant temp. of 80 degrees, using an enclosure and light bulb arrangement. I did get new granules and used whole milk and it started working within 24 hrs. Now, after about 8 - 9 times of making the kefir, I no longer have to incubate it, but can just leave it sit on the counter and it still works within 24 hrs. What I have noticed is that the granules are somewhat larger and I really think the first time around that I just did not get enough granules to make it work at room temp.

I've always enjoyed kefir, and after a recent colonoscopy (nuff said)you really are starting with a clean slate, so to speak. I wanted to populate my system with probiotics, but didn't want to pay $4 a qt. The small investment in kefir grains has rewarded us with an endless supply of kefir. It took a bit to get them started, but a few minutes on the chat line produced great kefir the very next batch. I have a small Styrofoam cooler, similar to an Omaha Steak style cooler, very dense, which I retrieved from the recycling depot. A quart of water inside the cooler provides enough heat to incubate a batch in about 12hrs. The grains have multiplied in numbers( not size) to where I can share some soon. Thanks for providing such a reliable product.

Order arrived very fast. On day 4 after starting rehydrating (I used whole organic milk) I already had kefir to drink! But it did not stop there. On day 5 I realized that 1litre of milk is too little for my grains. I transferred them into 1.89l jar that I filled with milk to the top. Amazingly I had kefir in less then 24 hrs. What I am doing now is I keep the jar in front of open window (I covered it with brown plastic bag) just to slow down the process a bit. I now use 2% organic milk ( as whole one did require agitation). The taste and texture of the kefir is amazing! It is drinkable and smooth.
My only "complaint" that it's like a pet (meaning you have to take care of it and feed it) and my pet is VERY productive.
I could not be happier with how it's turned out.

I bought my first batch of milk kefir grains from CFH back in 2011. Even though I did not handle them right at that time I still got a few years use out of them. Then one day they quit and I got a new batch. This time I prepared them right from the start. I drink raw milk only and did not know back in 2011 I could not use that milk to start the grains. This time I did right, buying pasteurized milk, changing every 24 hours, and slowly introducing some raw into the culture. Now my grains are acting like good healthy grains (the last batch never grew, these are!) and I am getting better quality kefir that before.

I am now making Kefir at home and am happy I can make full fat, organic Kefir in any flavor we desire. I feel better drinking Kefir daily. The thickest, most flavorful Kefir I’ve made was with raw dairy milk (following the special instructions on CFH).

I was timid about trying to culture Kefir again and mistakenly got confused while doing Filmjolk in the same month. Though both processed on the counter they require different feeding schedules. Online chat supported me awesomely along the way.

I no longer need to purchase sour cream or buttermilk and am learning all about the health benefits and tasty ways to use whey. (A byproduct of straining either of these cultures.) Buying just two cultures and learning on this website have opened a new way to work in my kitchen and make good gut bacteria (probiotics) at home.

My house is cool so after a few days of my kefir not thickening, I began keeping it in the oven with just the light on. This makes about 3 cups in 24 hours. I've begun flavoring my kefir in a second fermentation. Finding out what works and what doesn't. Hopefully my grains will begin to grow soon so I can give them away to introduce everyone to the benefit of cultured milk. Love that good bacteria!

Staff was very helpful too, since I needed alot of hand-holding during the first two weeks.

I received my grains in a timely manner. They have worked well, no disappointments. I was curious why mine wasn't growing or multiplying as some people's said theirs does and was told live cultures seem to multiply faster. Don't get me wrong though, that has not diminished their effectiveness at all...they work very well. I've bought a few things from Cultures for Health and everything has proven well.

This has been a great product. Cultures for Health does a great job of making the process super simple for first timers. The packaging instructions are very easy to follow and well presented. They also have great video support.

I decided to make water kefir on a whim and see how my family would like it. The love it!! After the kefir grains have fermented we transfer the water into another bottle with some organic lemon concentrate an let it sit out for another day or two. The result is a delicious, slightly effervescent lemonade. It's not funky tasting at all. It will definitely be the beverage of choice on hot summer days.

I am from Victoria, B.C. and wasn't able to find any grains locally.
While visiting Portland I was lucky enough to find a store that sold your Milk Kefir grains.
I flew home, worrying a bit about not being able to keep them cool during my flight and travel time.
I also worried about bringing them across the international border by I was pleasantly surprised that Canada Customs knew about kefir grains and welcome us both home :)
They re-hydrated well and we were making kefir within a few days.
The grains produce a beautifully smooth and wonderfully gentle flavoured kefir.
They were so happy I was able to share with my daughter and neighbor.
Lucky that I did as I was given some bigger and what I thought were "healthier" grains and added them to yours.
The cross pollinated version didn't suit me at all and while robust the texture and flavor really wasn't for me.
I managed to get the original back up and going and am so happy to have your original back in our daily diet.
Thanks for a great quality product!

After my 1st failed attempt, which I will explain, I am in love with my kefir, delicious!
This company is a joy to do business with.
I have been making kefir for many years, and unfortunately my last batch was left unattended for too long, as I was away for work. So I started all over with this companies granules, I was too impatient with using this product with 1st trial, it takes ALOT of daily making and pitching out the horribleness to finally get desired results. I wished I'd known. Now I'm making gorgeous kefir daily!

CFH Note~ The grains are living organisms, it can take a little time for them to adapt to the new environment but with plenty of fresh food and a moderate temperature, the grains should be processing the milk and making delicious kefir within 4 to 7 days.

I've been using for about six months now. Took awhile to get the knack of it, and it differs winter to summer, depending on temperature in the house.

I've gotten it now to be consistently delicious, quite tangy, and thick and creamy. Sometimes if it goes too far, it separates, but a quick shake and it's very drinkable and equally delicious.

I purchased both the water kefir and the dairy kefir. My dairy kefir takes less than 8 hours and my water kefir is taking about a week. I live in AZ and my house temp is 70. I've grown water kefir before and I'm positive once it warms up in here they will have a high rate of turn around. My dairy kefir turns so fast they i have to store the grains in the refrigerator several times a week, and when I take out to use they ramp right back up again turning the milk in less then 8 hours.
Oh and also this dairy kefir is far superior to store bought, it is mild in flavor with none of that sourness you get from store bought. I often second ferment with orange or lemon peel for flavor and it gets even better. Great company and customer service.

The kefir grains were activated in about 3 days. I have a routine going where I store the activated kefir grains the fridge for 3 days and start a batch of kefir and back in the fridge. This kefir has helped me. And it's natural and super cheap compared to medication. This kefir is a God send! And I would just buy the mesh strainer they sell here as its small and catches all the grains and is so much quicker to strain than with other strainers.

Right after getting my Cultures for Health kefir grains started I was due to leave on a six week RV vacation. I figured there had to be a way to keep the kefir growing with minimum trouble. There is: a French press, the ones used for coffee, works great. It filters out the grains when the screen is pressed through the kefir, leaving them in a tight space on the bottom of the press. I pour off the kefir, rinse the press part while adding fresh milk to the grains and voila, a new batch is started! An extra plus is that the screen/press part unscrews so I can keep it separate from the fermentation pitcher, and can use the pitcher lid without the screen/press. Everything is stainless and it works great. I got a 64 ounce press from Bed, Bath & Beyond (which isn't really 64 ounces, but close enough).
The culture is delicious! I am hooked.

I live in the northeast and, at this time of the year, my house tends to be on the colder side (65F). It took my kefir grains 6 days to finally "kefir". Now my grains reliably produce good-mild-tasting milk kefir every 36 hours, depending on how warm the house is. I like the mild taste instead of a over-ripe one. Initially I did have to use less milk than instructed (3/4 cup instead of 1 full cup) but my grains did finally wake up and start doing its magic.

I bought these milk kefir granules out of curiousity and because I wanted to support
Cultures for Health's wonderful web resources. I have been growing water kefir which I must say is easier in more ways than one. I had only tasted milk kefir once or twice. Being mesophilic, kefir has advantages over yogurt. You don't have to heat the milk, and you don't have to keep it so warm while culturing. But the straining was problematic for me, especially initially. My granules were vigorous in record time. I think they were "over cultured" in about 16 hours after I first put them in milk. I kept getting curds and whey and missing the 'kefir' stage completely. The problem with that is that retrieving your granules is time consuming and challenging when they're incorporated into the curd. You have to stir and force the curd through the sieve. Then, at some point you have to take what's left in the strainer including some curd &/or losing some granules. Interestingly, had I been willing to risk losing some granules, the curds were *very* tasty, and the grains are certainly nutritious and tasty also. Not having those issues with dealing with the grains would be the advantage of making yogurt. I've made kefir cheese now and love it. I don't prefer making the cheese because Whey protein is so valuable, I am not keen on straining it off. My main love and use for the kefir is putting it into my green smoothies. Thankfully whey keeps a very long time so I could find uses for it over time though. I use both the water and milk kefirs, combined in my morning smoothies. Anyway, in short, keeping ahead of these granules has been my challenge. I have several quarts in the frig now, and the dogs appreciate it too :-). I use raw goats milk and, BTW, I started using a 50/50 blend with ordinary powdered milk since I do not have a goat and do not take my supply for granted. I now have the pwdrd milk on hand as a back up to keep it fed. I believe that gives me the freedom to switch back and forth some. My husband has been calling me the alchemist, watching me strain and juggle my cultures. But I'm taking a break at the moment. It's in the frig in fresh milk. I have found other cultures to be very forgiving and resilient. I surely hope that's true about these as well. They've surely been vigorous so far!

This has been my first experience with producing my own fermented food.
I'm still sort of amazed it's working and tastes good. My life probably isn't

saving makes that well worth the risk. And I'm very satisfied that my homegrown

The grains were shipped, tracked and arrived at my doorstep exactly when Cultures for Health had indicated.
I re-hydrated them using organic whole milk (I think this substrate encouraged quicker and more robust rejuvenation of the grains). For the first few times of straining the grains, I had some troubles... since I didn't want to use stainless steel sieves, I used cheese cloth. REALLY DUMB MISTAKE, because the grains got stuck within the cloth, and I had to pick as many as I could out with clean hands to salvage them (I was pretty upset this evening!). Since I wasn't going to try that again, I decided to look for a suitable sieve... It's HARD to find plastic sieves at Target/GE/dollar stores/gourmet kitchen stores! I ended up ordering online. SO, I used stainless steel sieve on three occasions to strain the grains, and LUCKILY they remained intact, happy and able to produce an excellent product once fully hydrated! YAY!
Now, with my active ~1/2 tsp of milk kefir grains, my new plastic sieve, and regular purchase of organic whole milk, we are making pint-portions of home-made kefir that is absolutely delicious, nutritious and made fresh daily! My milk kefir grains arrived promptly and in good health. I followed the directions, using whole milk for a few days to get them going. I have since been using organic skim milk, and the resulting kefir is amazing. I make 12 oz every day, putting 4 ounces in my muesli for breakfast, and drinking the other 8. The taste is phenomenal. I love the texture, and the grains are reproducing at an amazing rate. It took me about a week or so to get the grains:milk ratio just right. Things are going perfectly for me with a heaping teaspoon of grains in a mason jar with 12 oz milk, covered with a cloth held on by a rubber band, left to set up in a cabinet. I had a few days of total separation, which was perplexing and upsetting. The problem, I discovered, is that I had the jar of kefir in the cupboard above my range and microwave. The heat from cooking dinner below was making the whole process go too fast. I simply moved the jar to an adjacent cabinet, and I now get perfect, fresh kefir every 24 hours. I would buy this product again, though I don't see any need for that at the rate they're multiplying. Thank you very much!

The grains arrived quickly. I was eager to start since I'm new to making kefir. When I opened my packet of milk kefir grains I was a little concerned because I didn't seem to have much there--like fine bread crumbs. I followed the instructions. It took about a week before I got drinkable kefir. The kefir is great but my concern is that after three weeks I still don't really see any grains. I use the strainer but it's basically to make sure I keep back about a tablespoon or so of kefir--assuming that the kefir grains are in that tablespoon. So, I'm not really sure if it's really the grains or just the kefir that's keeping each batch going. (I guess the grains have to be in there somewhere.) Either way, I've been getting great kefir but it would be nice to actually see the grains and know that I can keep them growing.

I already had kefir grain from Cultures For Health. This order was to give as a gift to my mother who lives in France. Since the grains had to travel by plane, I preferred ordering a proper commercial sealed packaging and an invoice rather than sending her home with some of my fresh ones. Her grains activated perfectly. She couldn't be happier.

The only thing that could have been better is he shipping cost (to Canada). It is double of what the kefir grains cost, making basically that teaspoon of grains a whopping 49$. This size a package, from the US, could certainly cost much less. I have to say though, silver lining, that the shipping is very fast.

I would still order from Cultures for Health (I need to add the Viili to my cultures) for it's difficult to beat that quality and variety of cultures, not to mention the great customer service.

Note from CFH: Due to the perishable nature of our products, shipping options to Canada are limited at this time, to protect the viability of the cultures.

Having never had kefir before, buying the grains was an adventure! At first I had major issues (several batches of spoiled milk), but then I consulted with a customer service rep and she informed me that my ultra-pasteurized milk (though organic) was probably the issue. I started using non-organic pasteurized and it worked! Overall, it took about 2 weeks to start regularly producing a quart of kefir. Now, my grains produce a quart usually in less than 12 hours at room temp (60-65 degrees). I was surprised at how good the kefir actually tasted (very much like yogurt), and am looking forward to using it in diverse recipes!

I bought my grains from a local health food store. It took a while and a few trials and errors to get consistent results, but the customer service reps were very helpful. I have been getting consistent results now for several months, and am very pleased with the end product. It's thick (even with skim milk) and pleasantly sour and yogurty. It takes five minutes each morning to give the little kefir-dudes some fresh milk, and they just do their thing. I'll be interested to see what happens in the hot and humid summer months.

I was expecting to have to wait a while, as they were dehydrated, and most everything I have read while researching kefir said that it would take 4-5 days (if not longer) to begin. It's been a few months since I received my grains and started making kefir, so I felt I should give an updated review in case anyone had been curious.

My grains have grown so much, and still produce wonderful kefir, even though I generally take a couple weeks off of making kefir (by keeping the grains in a jar of milk in the fridge - I replace the milk every week while they are in there) every month. I started with about a teaspoon of very small grains, and while they are still pretty small, they have at least doubled in size and I now have just shy of a cup of grains.

I'm still very happy with my purchase, and would definitely recommend Cultures For Health for anyone wanting to get started with kefir.

I have always wanted to try the grains for milk kefir; I've been using the powder, and I thought the grains would save me some money, being self-renewing! The grains woke up after the first batch of milk. By the second day I was already getting a quart of kefir per day! I'm single -- that's too much kefir for me, and since you are supposed to keep it active and feed it regularly, this doesn't seem practical for me. Also, it's a pain in the #@% to get the grains out of the kefir. I spend way too much time doing that. The powder seems worth its weight in gold, now. Although, I must say, I think I like the taste of the kefir made with grains a little bit better. I don't know why that is.

I've had the grains for a couple of weeks now. They took about 4-5 days to start producing drinkable kefir. My kitchen isn't particularly warm, but the milk coagulates in less than 24 hours, often separating into curds and whey within 24 hours if I don't strain it before then. The grains haven't appeared to multiply that much since I started with them, and I use about 2 cups of milk at a time. They must really like my milk, because these guys are obviously little fermenting powerhouses in it. I had tried milk kefir with grains that I had received from another source, a couple of years ago. That kefir gave me digestive upset. With the grains from Cultures for Health I haven't experienced any of those digestive issues. Not sure if it's the grains or my digestive tract being in better shape now than it was, but I'm thankful to be able to expand my range of healthful fermented foods.

I received my kefir grains on the day they were expected to arrive. They took about 4 days to rehydrate. They are VERY small and I strained the kefir through an unbleached coffee filter that I poked holes in with a toothpick. After a few days, I decided to try using my plastic colander, because using the coffee filter was taking a long time. Almost all of the grains went through the holes in the colander. We ordered a set of nylon mesh strainers through Amazon. The largest one is 5 inches. The other two are too small to use since you have to spread the kefir out to be able to see the grains. I would buy a 5 inch or 6 inch strainer. If you buy the set with the smaller ones, you probably won't use them. The grains are so much easier to separate from the kefir with the nylon mesh strainer. Order that when you order the grains and make your life easier. This is a good product and I would recommend it.

Our mountain cabin is heated only with a wood stove, so tends to cool down at night quite a bit after the fire goes out, the kefir grains took a bit longer to get going during the rehydrating phase- about 8 days. Once they finally revived, though, they work very well, though the overall cooler house temps make for a slightly longer fermentation time. As summer comes, Im sure that will reduce somewhat. The grains are multiplying and are vigorous.... And the kefir is thick and tart,

Response from CFH: You can attempt to make milk kefir using already cultured milk kefir, though you will likely not be able to culture more than one or two generations. This article has more details: http://www.culturesforhealth.com/make-kefir-from-prepared-kefir

Only about 1 tsp-1/2 tsp, or less, of milk kefir grains are required for 4 cups of milk. If making larger batches, gently stir the kefir a couple of times a day to allow the grains to come into contact with all of the milk.

We do not recommend regularly refrigerating the grains, however the grains will tolerate occasional refrigeration.

I received these grains and have used them successfully, they are very vigorous and produce a nice kefir in 18-24 hours. My only complaint is that when I received the product it was mostly powder, with just about 1/4 teaspoon of actual grains, so I can only make a small amount of kefir because the powder is lost during straining. Still, it makes a nice kefir if I retain a little bit of the previous batch of kefir to use as a starter liquid with the grains. It would be a greater value if it had more grains and less powder (their water kefir grains were great, and had a lot of nice, big grains).

Winter, even in Houston, is not the best time to rehydrate kefir milk grains and hope for instant success. It took us at least 6 days to start seeing what resembles kefir, and a learning curve. At the beginning, even after reading an assortment of web pages on how to make kefir, some things weren't clear to me: How to properly sieve the product to retain the tiny (very tiny) rehydrated grains. I made the mistake of rinsing my grains after the fourth day or so with tap water as was suggested by a previous poster (don't! Chlorine kills bacteria); still not sure if the full panel is alive (I'll never know). But I didn't want to spend another $18 on a new set of grains and start all over.

In all fairness, once we started actually making small parts of kefir, (starting from a half cup to almost a 3/4 pint within two weeks); it's become a ritual in the mornings after breakfast. My grains have grown to tapioca size, though they are still separate, not clustered like a cauliflower floret.

If this helps other newbies, don't put a spoon in your sieve because it traps or breaks up the grains. Simply agitate the cultured kefir milk in the glass or jar or whatever you used to culture it with the spoon so it resembles a creamy beverage rather than a gelatinous mass (and be gentle) and then pour it through a fine-meshed sieve. Anything that remains can be nudged through the sieve just by gently jiggling the sieve. Do not put a spoon in it. Mix up the sieved kefir with the spoon if you want.

Try the finished product (perfect on its own) with a dash of salt and cumin--and enjoy a beverage called "chhas."

Grains rehydrated in 5 days and began kefiring! Now my grains seem to be deminishing and getting smaller! I can't find a plastic strainer either that is small enough! I am going to ask my raw milk source about antibiotics in feed! Kefir is good, but still only doing about 2 cups every 24 to 36 hours!

CFH tip: try our fine mesh strainer. It works great with Milk Kefir Grains!

Seems to make kefir/gel to quick from the start. Also, there are so few grains you can hardly find them. The water kefir grains are much easier to identify and use. I don't care for the taste as well as the water kefir. That doesn't mean their is anything wrong with it-it's just my preference. I'm not disappointed in the product it's just that I like the water kefir is better and that it is easier to use.

I received these grains in record time, which is great except that they arrived 3 days sooner than they were projected to so I was not home to receive them. They seem none the worse for sitting on the porch for a few hours but it is winter. I suppose this could have been a problem in summer. My grains woke up happy and productive ahead of schedule as well. My only previous experience making Kefir was using grains given to me by someone who had some to give away. Those grains were significantly larger and much easier to find if the kefir got away from me. These grains are tiny, kind of like a needle in a haystack if your kefir separates, which mine did. These grains were much more awake than I anticipated from the instructions - also not a real problem, just unexpected and required closer monitoring.

My kefir grains work just fine and produce okay kefir, though I honestly prefer the plain kind from the store. But I bought the "starting out with kefir" package set, which included the little plastic strainer, too. I wish I'd just bought the grains, because the strainer is too tiny to fit very much kefir at a time, so it makes the straining process more arduous than it should be. Also, I don't know if I am just abusing my grains, but they have never grown. So I see videos of how "easy" it is to strain kefir, but these people are using like popcorn-sized grains, and I'm trying to sort the miniscule rice-sized grains out of my kefir to keep for the next batch, wondering if maybe I should have bought fresh ones elsewhere! I use raw, whole cow's milk.
So they do their job, they make kefir, but it is kind of a pain in the rear, and I dread doing it every day. And my kids won't drink it because it doesn't taste like store-bought.

The culture seemed very expensive for a few granules. The product worked well and was easy to hydrate. I find that I have more questions than available answers. I don't understand the doubling effects of the granules and am afraid I am mixing them in the drink. All in all I think the product certainly is more flexible than the powder product, more convent and less expensive in the long run.

My grains started producing kefir that I wanted to drink within 3 days. The kefir is delicious and mild. However, since I am making kefir only for myself and can't drink 4 cups every day, I have had to take some measures to slow the grains down. I am now using only a few grains and they culture about 12 oz of milk in 24 hours. The rest of the grains are stored in milk at the back of my fridge. Unless I find a friend who wants them, they will go to waste. Buying these grains is far less expensive than purchasing kefir from the supermarket, but I would have liked to see another, cheaper option to purchase fewer grains.

This is the second batch of kefir grains purchased from CfH. The grains make super kefir that we enjoy drinking every day. The packet of grains that was most recently purchased contained about 5x more grains than the packet from our first purchase about a year ago. In rehydrating the grains, we had good kefir in 2 days. The packet purchased a year ago took close to 2 weeks of the rehydration process before getting good kefir. Don't understand such inconsistent quality.

I purchased one package of milk kefir that contained some powder and no grains. That culture produced curds and whey. The whey was sour and eventually the whole culture went sour. I gave it a one star review on Amazon and Cultures for Health replaced the product. The second package contained a little white powder and grains of various size. It began producing good kefir milk after the third batch. Then I tried heavy cream. The culture makes the best sour cream I've ever eaten. The milk isn't as good as a culture I had from a previous supplier, but it's good.

I was really excited when ordering these Kefir Grains, as they were a gift to my boyfriend. However, I was highly disappointed when following a simple 2 cup milk to 2 tablespoons kefir grains ratio and there weren't even enough grains for one tablespoon. The grains are fine-but I think a bit pricy. My Dr. recommended I make this-was told the grains were $12-but came to almost $24 with shipping! This has been a new experience. I had to buy a new strainer as I didn't know if mine was stainless steel-only acceptable one I could find was $9.00-& it was hard to find in my area! Had a hard time finding organic milk that wasn't ultra pasteurized. My husband came home excited to find some-BUT it wasn't organic-so add on the price of the non organic and the organic once we found it-half gallons each. I made the coconut milk version and it is very good but I can only have a Tablespoon a day to start. I have 2 batches made and am not really sure what I should be doing with the grains. I saved a little liquid from the kefir & have them in that in the refrigerator! At this point I think it would have been easier for me to stick with the store bought but maybe it will get better when I can eat more of it.

We drink raw milk, and I purchased half a gallon in order to activate and transition the grains to raw milk as directed. It only took two days for the grains to begin working - although I never tasted the kefir, the consistency looked right. I began transitioning to raw milk according to the instructions. I used 25% raw milk, and it went off. I never got past 25% raw milk, but four days later I was out of pasteurized milk, it smelled foul each time, and had to dump the whole thing. Quite an expensive experiment, and now I'm back to purchasing kefir. I would love for this to work and will likely buy again to try again. Just don't want to be out that much more if it won't work with raw milk...

It took about 7 days of trials to get the kefir to thicken so I threw out a lot of sour milk the first week. After about the fourth or fifth day I called and they told me I needed to use whole milk, which I was unaware that I needed to. After that it did make kefir in two more days. This worked well for about a week with me gradually adding more raw milk than non raw, then suddenly clumps of custard appeared in the milk. Sorry but expecting to swallow keifer and getting a clump of custard sliding down my throat wasn't pleasant. It had not turned to curds and way as these clumps were solid and smooth. I'm taking a break as I've had to throw out so much, but will try again...

CFH Note ~ It is important to contact Customer Support when issues arise. An increase in the volume of milk or decrease in culturing time usually with helps the custard texture. Change the milk weekly while the grains are in storage and give them time to adjust when you begin the process again. Let us know if you have any questions or issues, we're always happy to help.

I am new to making kefir, I have been doing it now for two months. I ordered grains from two different sources and prefer these milk grains. They produce nice sweet kefir very regularly. When straining the kefir after fermenting I do not get the kind of grains I've seen in photos. I strain 7/8 of it and leave part in the bottom of the jar to start another batch. Making kefir couldn't be any easier. I feel better having a kefir drink every day and I believe it has mitigated my allergy symptoms significantly.

The amount of grains are miniscule. The work that they do is amazing! They actually make the milk gel nicely and make a nice kefir. Re-hydrating instructions very clear and easy to follow. The grains are up and running and they produce nice milk kefir. However, there are only three grains and they are neither growing much in size, nor reproducing. The kefir grains worked and my kefir is excellent. But there were really only 3-4 decent sized grains in the package I received. Had I had any hiccups in the rehydrating process, it wouldn't have worked and could have lost them all, and I would have had to re-order a new package. Given the price and the cost of shipping, they should double or triple the amount of grains in each package.

Response from CFH: Just 1 tsp of rehydrated grains is all that is needed to culture 1 quart of milk. We've found that with many sets of grains, just 1/4 tsp can culture 3 to 4 cups of milk as well! 100% my fault but had I read far enough to find the mention of dehydration, I would have searched for a monger of hydrated grains as well as enough grains to do the job with more rapidity than I suspect this exiguous count will achieve.

I guess I messed it up because I finally gave up after 10 days of trying to do exactly what the directions said. The kefir grains were so small I may have lost several but the little one I had didn't make as strong of Kefir. I should have contacted your support before giving up but I am disappointed.

I ordered and followed the directions. At about day nine they still hadn't re-produced much. As another reviewer pointed out, you only get about 1/4 teaspoon. It made wonderful kefir, but I kept loosing the tiny grains. I ended up adding them to another batch of grains and have no idea if they are even there anymore. I would like them to add more of the grains to the package. I feel like I paid for at least one tablespoon, but only received a few grains.

this is my first attempt at using the grains. I opened the package and didn't have a CLUE what I was looking at!I followed directions, using milk right out of the frig....first mistake I suspect. the following day, runny as the milk I started with...and the most-PUTRID smell. knowing about bad odors, etc, I thought I'd continue the process anyway to see what happens. Next batch..very thin still, but the horrible smell was gone. Now after six exchanges, I think I'm looking at the consistancy of Kefir, but the taste is very flat and un-eventful as well as the taste, and the grains are very very tiny. are they yellowish tiny little beads?? All I would like to know is if I'm still on the right track and I will "persevere”.

Response from CFH: Culturing temperature is important to proper culturing of milk kefir. The acceptable range is 68-85ºF. Please contact customer support for troubleshooting advice.

I received a very small amount - 1 teaspoon re-hydrated- it took forever to do more than 2 cups of milk.

My recent order of Kefir grains have NOT performed and developed into proper culture form ... 3 weeks later.
I had previously had a system processing for over a year without issue. Not Pleased.

CFH Note: It is important to contact CFH Customer Support when problems arise, we are usually able to recommend small changes to encourage the grains to activate. The most common cause of problems this time of year is a culturing temperature that is too low making it difficult for the grains to activate.

I've had kefir grains in the past, and even though sometimes a few of them got stringy (during warm weather), most of them looked nice and fluffy. These current kefir grains just look like curdled milk. They do culture the milk at least.

I have been having problems with my grains from the start. They took 15 days to activate. The quality of my kefir is not good it doesn't thicken as it should. In fact the only way I can get it to thicken at all is to add some kefir to it. Have tried everything that customer support has recommended. Now what?

Very disapointed with this Kefir Grains. Took 5 Days to Reconstitute and after that it produced sour milk at best. After leaving the grains in the milk for more then 12 hours it curdeled so bad that i could not even seperate the tiny grains anymore. Ended up throwing the whole thing down the drain. Maybe those Kefir Grains are better for poeple with experience.

I need to say the staff here is really helpful first off. Secondly after several weeks of trying this I am done.

I have easily gone through 4-5 gallons of milk after weeks of trying and all I have is a teaspoon of grains and bad tasting sour or coagulated milk I through out. I probably spent $50 trying make this stuff, I could have bought 15 qts at the grocery store. Perhaps my fault for lack of skill but I can make better tasting beverages by putting store bought Greek yogurt in warm milk over night. Its really hard for me to believe at this point this stuff can make good kefir like the starter packs I have used in the past.

I put my grains in a small amount of milk and in the refrigerator - I think I may strain and put in powdered milk and dehydrate. Maybe try again some day, apparently this really does work for some people. I need to stop dumping gallons of milk down the drain.

After using up three gallons of milk trying to wake up the dried milk kefir grains.....still no real kefir to speak of. With the price of the milk along with the price of the grains, this was an expensive fail. I went elsewhere for some fresh milk kefir grains and had immediate success. I would not recommend starting with dried grains.

It started out really well. I converted it from pasteurized to raw milk and was getting great kefir quickly (almost too quickly!) with a great tangy flavor and I was feeling better after I had been drinking it for about a week... but... over time it has slowly stopped working. The great flavor is gone and it's more reminiscent of spoiled milk and my grains have not grown at all.

I bought a set of dehydrated milk kefir grains 4 months ago. I have been dutifully culturing them since they've arrived. And although I am indeed making kefir daily with organic milk (following all directions perfectly), the grains have yet to seem healthy and active. They have not multiplied, and in fact so many of the grains that arrived in my package were teeny tiny crumbs...By now most of those have disappeared through the strainer that came with my kit.

I've decided to order more grains from another site, for comparison sake. Maybe I just got a bad batch. This is a lovely website, but based on my experience, the quality of the product doesn't measure up.

For what it's worth, the sticker on the back of the dehydrated grains says "5500/196 best by 10/2014" - and the amount of grains inside the package was less than a teaspoon. Probably about a 1/4 teaspoon. Maybe I just got a lemon?

Unless this was a packaging error, there were fewer than 1/4 teaspoon of grains. I've been struggling making one cup of kefir at a time. If the pictures are any indication of the package quantity, then I think the pictures were quite misleading (enlarged?) compared to what I actually received. These little grains work alright, I make a cup every day. It's just not practical to fuss with a one cup batch. And for that price I really expected enough to culture 3 to 4 cups of milk as the directions state. Given 72 hours this little bit does culture 3 cups. I am using my yogurt maker and it works quite well for this. Just want to do more at a time and the little grains don't multiply very fast. I tried to make like the instructions say with 3 cups of milk but it took too long, and the end product wasn't very creamy like it is when I make 1 cup at a time. Otherwise the product shipped quickly and makes great kefir.

Response from CFH: Please contact customer support so we can troubleshoot, as we're happy to help. *** Milk kefir grains cultured in a yogurt maker will kill the grains. Their range is only 68-85ºF. ***

Ended up wasting at least a gallon or more of expensive organic milk refreshing the grains every day for almost two weeks before I just gave up and dumped them in the trash.

Such a small amount of grains and they never did smell right, smelled more like bread yeast than kefir.

I had good luck with the dehydrated powder and with the water kefir, don't think I'll waste more money trying these again.

I am now into three weeks of growing kefir grains from dehydrated product with no luck. Raw milk is used when available, goat milk and organic. I have a few yellow specks in the milk (kefir) when I change the milk each day...not happy. Feel as if I am wasting my time and money. It takes over a half hour to sift through the milk to find a couple of yellow dots. When I opened the dehydrated grains at the beginning I saw no yellow grains. I have ordered fresh grains from another company and they are already growing and producing kefir in just a couple of days with the same milk products. I have read tons of literature to be sure it isn't my error and I believe I am doing everything to the best of my ability.

I've had these grains for a month and they never activated. The milk doesn't thicken at all. The packet contains a tiny amount of white powder, not at all what I expected looking at the video. The closest thing to kefir it made tasted more like sour milk. I just think for the price, the grains should be at least the size of rice, not microscopic. It has been 2 wks since I started mine and I feel like I have wasted all that milk and still no kefir, I feel like it is because of the unacceptable size. I can only drink raw milk so cooking with the recommended pasteurized stuff to activate isn't an option. You guys have a great system, great support but the product needs to be improved in my opinion!! Put a grain in there that is a decent size PLEASE! In the past I have gotten 2 packages of milk kefir grains and they used to be bigger/visible. I wouldn't recommend this product until you guys start selling grains that aren't going to dissolve and start to work eventually. I expect the grins to look like the sample video, she shows it in her hand you can see it! Send me that package and the number of stars on this rating will go up!

The amount of grains you get is about 1/8 of a tsp and their size can fit on the head of a pin. I've read that they should at least be the size of a wheat berry. Hard to strain these out of milk.
