Get started making kombucha tea immediately! This starter kit includes a strainer which is a very useful accessory for when making kombucha.

  • Make delicious probiotic-rich kombucha tea
  • Gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan
  • Reusable culture; transfer the culture from batch to batch
  • With proper care, the culture can be used indefinitely to create delicious fermented tea
  • Easy to make; can be flavored a variety of ways

A kombucha starter culture (a.k.a. kombucha scoby, mushroom, mother) consists of yeast and bacteria existing in a symbiotic relationship. When combined with brewed tea, sugar, and water and allowed to ferment for 7 to 30 days, the resulting kombucha tea beverage has a slightly carbonated zing and is packed full of B vitamins.

Save money! Commercially available kombucha tea generally sells for $3+ for a 16-ounce bottle. Using our kombucha starter culture, you can brew kombucha tea for $2 a gallon or less! With proper care, the kombucha scoby can be used over and over to brew a refreshing, vitamin-filled kombucha tea.

Kombucha scobys are manufactured in a facility that also processes dairy, soy, wheat, nut, and fish products. Kombucha scobys are culture (no animal byproducts).

Since my SCOBY is still reconstituting I can't say much about how a batch has turned out, but I will say that the directions, online videos and kit have made this a really easy process so far. I'm looking forward to making my first batch in the next couple of weeks! (Posted on March 20, 2014)

Should of bought a live Scoby from a different supplier. Review by Blondy

I was under the impression by watching the video that I would be able to make the Kombucha right away. Rehydrating over and over again is just ridicules. It states nowhere that it will take several times. It would of been cheaper to buy live and less of a hassle. I asked for my money back and all I get is how to continue to rehydrate. Think I'll buy another from a dealer that sells live Scoby's.

Response from CFH: Instructions included with culture state that a baby scoby may not form for a few batches. Rehydration does not need to be repeated. Please contact customer support for troubleshooting advice before discarding product. Many cultures can be saved with minor adjustments. (Posted on February 25, 2014)

I followed all directions perfectly. I think the culture was DOA. I just sat there for 31 days. I really would like a culture that works or my money back.

Response from CFH: Contacted customer but received no response. Please contact customer support for troubleshooting advice before discarding product. Many cultures can be saved with minor adjustments. (Posted on February 12, 2014)

My kombucha starter kit arrived promptly, sooner than I expected! The packaging is very professional in appearance with well laid out labels, artful and simple. The booklet of instructions is reassuringly clear, readable, and complete. The scoby is still rehydrating, so I don't really know yet how my actual kombucha will turn out, but I have contacted Cultures for Health several times online and have received answers to all of my questions in a very timely manner. Both the live chat and the contact through email have elicited prompt replies. I am very impressed with their customer service! (Posted on February 7, 2014)

The starter is now almost three weeks old and is still the same as the day I put it into the tea. Do not like this much hassel. Mary

I have been contemplating Kombucha for quite some time, whether I wanted to brew it myself or not. It is definitely cheaper to make it yourself. I find Cultures for Health's kit and instructions very encouraging and reliable. I could have bought a SCOBY from a local source, but I wanted a reliable source. This kit is definitely worth it. I had a question, I came to this website and the "Chat Operator" came on right away and answered my question. (Posted on February 4, 2014)
Not as expected Review by GypsyVegan

I am usually very satisfied with your products unfortunately, not with this one. Prompt service, well packaged, and well written instructions. But after the 30 days of soaking my dry scoby, it was flat and dead. I do not think is a good idea to dehydrate a living thing and then try to bring it back to life. There is a 50-50% chance of working or not, and I guess it was my turn to lose.

CFH Response: There aren't a lot of visual signs that a rehydrating kombucha scoby is working. The scoby won't change much but it is busy consuming / converting the sugar and lowering the pH of the sugared tea. Testing with a pH indicator strip is a great way to see that everything is progressing normally. Any time you have a problem with a culture, please contact us. We are usually able to recommend simple adjustments to ensure you stay on track. (Posted on February 4, 2014)

I have done everything according to the book. I am on
my third batch of kombucha, seven days in and I have yet
to get a baby. The first two batches I used the vinegar and this third batch I used the 2nd batch kombucha. Will
keep trying to see what happens and update on future batches.

Response from CFH: It is normal that no baby scoby forms for the first few batches, when beginning with a dehydrated scoby. (Posted on January 21, 2014)

I bought this as a gift, and I couldn't ask for a more quality product! It gave you the tools you needed (minus the sugar and jar, of course)to make your own kombucha exactly as stated. I would highly recommend this product. (Posted on January 10, 2014)

I searched everywhere for a kombucha kit like this. Look no further! This is seriously so easy and so worth it! I used to spend like a million bucks a month at the health food store for this stuff..now I can make it for pennies! And if you ever have questions or need anything, they have a hotline! The hotline feels more like you are calling an out-of-state cousin... Jerri was awesome. 6 stars! (Posted on November 21, 2013)

I'm waiting for my scoby to rehydrate... I read the instructions, watched the instructional video to make sure I'm doing everything accordingly, and I'm counting the days until I can get my first batch going. The kit is so easy and all inclusive. Great product and I look forward to purchasing other products as well! (Posted on October 24, 2013)

I've ordered twice from CFH and both times my product has arrived super fast! That's without paying extra for express shipping. Like a previous review, I too am still rehydrating my scoby and cannot wait for it to be ready to make kombucha! I ordered the kit (which I highly recommend!) and was pleased to see it included 4 tea bags to get started. I used an old spaghetti sauce jar, covered it with a coffee filter and secured it with a clean hair tie. The strainer/sieve is on the small side but very good quality. And it is plastic so I can use it to make kefir as well. All in all, this is a fantastic product, well worth the money!!! (Posted on October 24, 2013)

Regrettably, my MS brain and lack of adequate funds have made it impossible to start my Kombucha starter. I've watched the video, and I can't wait to get started. I need a good jar, then I'm ready. My starter is in the fridge awaiting me. (Posted on May 24, 2013)
