Water Kefir Starter Kit

I bought a kombucha starter kit at the same time as the water kefir grains, and I've made several batches of kefir while the kombucha is still rehydrating. This is a great first culturing project because it's very instant gratification, and I find water kefir much easier to drink than milk kefir. This is mostly because it's like soda if you store it in an airtight bottle, or like juice if you use mason jars, rather than like drinkable yogurt.
My favorite drink so far is lemonade, secondary fermented for 48 hours before sticking it in the fridge for another day or two. I also highly recommend doing a secondary ferment with an overripe pear. It's like hard pear cider with more sweetness and probiotic goodness and 100% less hangover.
