Milk kefir grains are live active cultures consisting of yeast and bacteria existing in a symbiotic relationship. Adding the kefir grains to fresh milk yields a delicous probiotic drink in about 24 hours. Milk kefir can be enjoyed plain, flavored, or used in many recipes, like salad dressing, bread, and ice cream.

  • Contains 1 packet of traditional heirloom-style milk kefir grains.
  • Rehydration period of 3-7 days required before regular use.
  • Reusable culture; makes up to 1 quart of kefir with every batch
  • Instructions for using milk kefir grains are included.
  • Cultures on the counter at 68°-85°F
  • Suitable for use with cow or goat milk.
  • Grains require rehydration in pasteurized dairy milk. Once rehydrated, grains may be transitioned to raw milk.
  • May be used to culture coconut, soy, or rice milk once rehydrated in dairy milk; grains require regular refreshing in dairy milk.
  • Nut and seed milks yield inconsistent results. 


Ingredients: Organic whole milk, live active cultures. Packaged in a small amount of organic powdered milk to extend shelf life. 

This product contains no GMO ingredients.

Why I Love This Product:

Milk kefir is my favorite fermented food! It is so easy to make. Every 2 days or so I spend 5 minutes straining and pouring the milk on top of my grains. My kids love it (especially mixed with a little honey). Because the milk kefir grains are reusable, they are an easy inexpensive way to make kefir forever! This is a perfect starter culture for anyone just starting out making their own fermented foods, or for families with only a little time on their hands!     • Are your kefir grains certified gluten free or just gluten free?
      -I noticed on the website you state: "Milk Kefir Grains are produced in a facility that also processes soy, wheat, nut, and fish products."
      -Are they processed or shared on same equipment as wheat or any way there could be cross contamination?

    • Once you make the kefir, do you have to make a new batch every 24-48 hours? (I probably will anyway, but just wondering). Also I want to ferment mine so that there is no lactose in it, and I've read it takes 24 hours of fermenting for that to happen. Does "ferment" just mean the 24 hour natural process it takes to make the kefir by leaving it out?

    • Yes, the grains should be added to fresh milk to make a new batch every 24-48 hours, to keep the grains healthy and well-fed. That's correct, the fermentation process takes place as the grains sit in the fresh milk on your countertop, converting the milk to kefir.

    • I forgot about my kefir grains and left them in the refrigerator a little too long, and they became a little funky--moldy I think. Are they salvageable or should I dispose of them. I just put them in fresh milk and was planning to change it each day for a few days to refresh them.

    • It very uncommon to find mold developing on a batch of Kefir. However unlikely, mold can and does occasionally develop and can generally be seen by the formation of white, green, orange, red or black spots on the surface of the Kefir.

      If mold does develop, immediately toss the entire batch including the Kefir Grains. Do not try to salvage a moldy batch or a moldy Kefir Grains even if you do not see mold on the Kefir Grains themselves. Doing so may be dangerous to your health. Obtain a new set of Kefir Grains, clean the jar thoroughly, and try again another day.

      Grain was creamy paste. I never see grains as on photo.
      So now, I got one from your Grains. I am still waiting

    • I haven't made kefir before. If using store bought non fat milk, are there any issues besides being thinner that I need to know about? Will the grains live fine with consistant use of non fat milk? Will the kefir be lumpy instead of smooth. Anything else I should know in this regard?

    • Milk with any fat content ranging from fat-free to whole milk may be used with Kefir Grains. While Kefir made with reduced fat or fat-free varieties of milk will have a thinner consistency, the fat content itself does not influence the effectiveness of the Kefir Grains or the culturing process.

      We strongly recommend avoiding Ultra-High Temperature (UHT) or Ultra-Pasteurized (UP) milk.

    • While animal-based milks are the healthiest for the Kefir Grains, alternative types of “milk” (coconut, soy, rice, nut, etc.) can also be used under certain conditions. Generally speaking, Coconut Milk, Soy Milk, and Rice Milk can be cultured using Kefir Grains as long as a revitalization period is observed (see below). While some people report success culturing Kefir Grains in seed and nut milks (e.g. hemp milk, almond milk, etc.), these varieties tend to yield more inconsistent results.

      Revitalization Period. When using a non-animal variety of milk, it is important to occasionally allow the Kefir Grains to revitalize in animal milk for 24 hours. We recommend allowing the Kefir Grains a revitalization period at least once every few weeks and ideally more often. To revitalize the Kefir Grains, simply place the Kefir Grains in 1-2 cups of animal milk for 24 hours. Once the process is complete, the Kefir Grains can be returned to use with an alternative variety of milk.

The grains are working great! It's so easy once you get them started which for me took about a week. Now I make 1 qt of kefir everyday which costs about $0.50/qt. v.s. $3-4 from the store. Yea!!

We received our grains and followed instructions to rehydrate them. Now we are making 4 cups every day. My grains haven't grown but that has not stopped them from producing kefir. My husband and I and our two dogs drink the whole 4 cups daily. My husband has been teasing me about my "experiment" but he is now admitting that he feels so much better and our two dogs beg for kefir and are running around like young dogs. Their coats are nicer and their eyes brighter and they have more energy. The strange thing is that both my husband and I are lactose intolerant. These nifty little grains feed on the lactose and we have had no problem with the lactose at all. I am so happy that Cultures for Health offer these fantastic kefir grains. For the initial price along with the cost of milk, you can have a lifetime of healthy drink. We drink it straight, we put it in smoothies, we add fruits and juices. The possibilities are endless.

Mine had a slow start- might be the temp in the house and it is multiplying very slowly (I use organic milk) but what I have there is very healthy looking grains..Oh and did I say I am ADDICTED to Kefir! Can't seem to get enough...I love it...

I received a very small amount - 1 teaspoon re-hydrated- it took forever to do more than 2 cups of milk.

Response from CFH: One teaspoon of milk kefir grains are all that is needed to culture up to 4 cups of milk. Please contact us before discarding any cultures. Some cultures may require a minor adjustment.

I first ordered milk kefir grains and they did not work right, they must have been bad because all I made was rotten milk. After speaking to customer service, I received some new grains along with detailed instructions and this kefir has turned out to be wonderful. It has worked great from the start and we have made some good kefir that my family loves.

Awhile back I had some grains that were so hard to use, never growing significantly and hard to strain out and reuse. I gave up for awhile, but missed this wonderfully probiotic drink so ordered these grains. Within 2 days they were making kefir. They have grown and multiplied, are easy to strain out of the finished product, and live happily on my counter in local raw milk from grassfed cows. I'm a fan!

After 4 days I started to drink kefir, it was fresh and good the first week. The next week kefir had smell and I had to through away everything.
Bad instruction! Special in the begining.

I'm really happy with the kefir grains. When they came, I was feeling anxious that I would not be able to get them to work. I followed the instructions exactly, and in about 5 days I began to make kefir. The small amount of grains that I got makes 1.5 cups of kefir in about 12 hours in my 77 degree house. I am looking for a cooler place in the house to store them, and plan to add more milk so that I can slow down the process a little.

I was so looking forward to trying this new endeavor. I'm sure the fault was all mine (though I followed the directions as closely as I could), but I was never able to get kefir that tasted good. In fact, I would describe the taste as foul. I'm sure it was a case of user error, but I don't know what I could have done differently. I wound up throwing away the grains after a couple of weeks' worth of attempts (and quite a bit of wasted milk). I would recommend trying it, and I may again in the future because I would be delighted if I could make it work.

Reviewing after an 8 day experience, including the rehydration period.

The day I started rehydrating coincided with a really hot weather wave for 2-3 days.The second and the third days the yield I had was a fermented product in a consistency of yoghurt, which tasted extremely good. By increasing the amount of fresh milk as suggested, I started to get fermented kefir in a drink consistency.

After 5-6 days, the little amount of grains I started with began to swell in size, which I hope grows bigger as many others experienced.
