Details

Bottling your kombucha tea or water kefir with some fruit juice allows the carbonation to increase making for a delicious, healthy, and fizzy probiotic beverage your whole family will enjoy.

750 ml amber-colored glass bottle with flip-top (Grolsch-style) stopper system made of metal, polymer, and plastic. The bottles are 11-7/8" tall, or 12-3/8" with the lids on.

Please note: when using the bottles for any product that will be under pressure (water kefir, kombucha, beer, lacto-fermented soda, etc.) be sure to check the bottle for cracks prior to each use as cracks will weaken the integrity of the bottle. We also recommend "burping" the bottles periodically to relieve excess pressure.

Why I Love This Product

Although mason jars with good seals work, Grolsch bottles are by far the best for second ferments. They look sleek, and seal fabulously to help your cultured drinks create great carbonation. I own 16 of these bottles, split between water kefir and kombucha. My favorite drink is grape flavored water kefir. I fill the bottle with water kefir to just below where the neck narrows, then add about ¼ cup organic grape juice. It cultures 48 hours on the counter with a “burping” at 24 hours to release any gases. By the 36th-48th hour I have fizzy carbonated grape kefir that is poured over frozen blueberries. It’s amazing!

    • Is the rubber gasket only good for a limited amount of uses? I notice that several online bottles say they are only good for 6-8 uses.
    • The rubber gasket is good to use many, many times. We have had no reports that is it wearing out after only a few uses.

    • All the sites I look at say to use clear bottles. I trust your information that the amber is fine, I'm just wondering why they all are adamant on the clear?
    • There seem to be two schools of thought on bottling kombucha. Those who advocate for clear bottles claim that the kombucha will try to detoxify any environment it is in. Their theory is that darker glass has more impurities, thereby causing the kombucha to leach more of those impurities into the kombucha. Truthfully, any glass can contain impurities, and so it is always important to buy bottles from a source you trust.

Other kombucha aficionados point out that kombucha, as a life form, is sensitive to light. Storing the kombucha in a dark glass container blocks more light and protects the scoby.

It is also much easier to come by amber-colored flip-top bottles. Especially ones strong enough to handle the build up of pressure you can sometimes get with kombucha and water kefir. So some people just go for what they can obtain! We encourage you to do your own research and decide what you feel is best for your own needs.

    • How long to the stoppers last? I've read some places they only last 5 uses.....is that true with these bottles? If so, can you get replacement tops?
    • Our customers are very pleased with the Grolsch Flip Top Bottles and have not reported issues with the tops. We do not carry replacements but you may be able to find them at your local beer and wine making supply store.

    • The bottles are glass. The stopper system is made of metal, polymer, and plastic

    • Can these bottles be sterilized in boiling water?
    • Yes, but I would recommend removing the metal piece with its cap. The caps could become deformed when heated to boiling, especially if left unattended. They are fairly easy to remove once you get used to them.

    • We use your grolsch flip-top bottles are are wondering the best cleaning method between fermenting water kefir. We are noticing residue and do not want to use harsh cleaners or anything that would affect the fermentation.

    • It's good to avoid harsh cleaners, particularly anti-bacterial detergents. I'd recommend a bottle brush for easier cleaning.

    • I am very disappointed to see that these come from China...I need some, but, hope to find some made in the USA.

Do you have any plans to stock USA made bottles in the future?

      Thank you!
    • We have searched for a US manufacturer for the bottles, it appears that none are making this style of bottle.

    • If I'd like to do a second brewing stage on Kombucha, where would I find more information? I'm going to be on GAPS (a variation of the SCD) and regular sugar is a big no-no, but fruits and honey are okay. I was thinking that perhaps a continuous brew of the regular Kombucha and then adding fruits for flavor and giving them a second ferment- but I can't have alcohol either... as I'm nursing. I'm not sure where to ask these questions.
    • You will find information about a second fermentation here: http://www.culturesforhealth.com/bottling-kombucha-and-water-kefir Kombucha requires regular sugar for fermentation, you will find more information about choosing ingredients here: http://www.culturesforhealth.com/kombucha-ingredients We would encourage you to contact your health care provider to discuss drinking Kombucha while nursing.

    • Does the side wire supposed to come down to seal the top on the opening of the bottle? Because mine does not closes tight but I can't get the side wire down. Please tell me what's normal.
    • Yes, the side wire flips down to seal the top but the tops can be a little stiff when they are new. They will loosen up as you use them.

Very Elegant, but... Review by CTGirl

I find these are very difficult to open. I'm kind of surprised by the stellar reviews. They are excellent quality, and very reasonably priced, but they really are not pleasant to open. Over time, they get a little easier to open, but I have broken many nails (and I have short nails!). Also, they are a little too tall for my fridge. Overall, very nice, but I prefer to use a Ball jar (not nearly as elegant, but much more user friendly). (Posted on July 2, 2014)

I ordered one bottle and liked it so much I placed another order for more. I use the bottle for second ferments of Kefir water, and Kombucha as well as bottles for my homemade vinegar. They make great gifts especially when filled with my special recipes. I researched the price on the internet and this is the best price for a few bottles at a time. (Posted on June 16, 2014)

I'm constantly on the lookout for swing-top bottles, and these are some of the best value I've found other than some holding fancy soda at Rosauers ($3.99 for a swing-top bottle with soda in it). They easily hold a batch of water kefir made in a 1-quart jar. (Posted on May 28, 2014)

I am using this for water kefir and to bottle fresh juice when I'm heading to the beach. I have also been storing coconut milk in it.

Either way this product is a great one. (Posted on May 14, 2014)

This bottle works great. My only complaint is that it is hard to open. I have to use a screw driver.

CFH response: The wire for the caps can fit pretty snugly at first but will loosen a little with use. (Posted on April 21, 2014)

These bottle work great. I order 6 and gave 2 to my daughter. If I had any issues at all with these it would be the size. I think I would rather use more bottles that were 1/2 the size. Bust they work perfectly! (Posted on April 10, 2014)

The bottles are high quality and work great. I wish they were clear glass so you could see the content in the bottle better. It would also be easier for cleaning. I will look for similar bottles that are clear and I am not likely to buy more of these. (Posted on April 5, 2014)

These were much more than what I imagined them to be. They are a great size, the top fits snuggly on it, so no worry of leakage. The shipment was quick and they were packed well to prevent shipping. I love the dark color, as I've heard that is always better in protecting your product inside. Thanks Cultures for Health. You are a wonderful website. (Posted on March 28, 2014)

I use these for a second ferment with both kombucha and water kefir. They hold a good amount of liquid, seal tight, and store nicely in my fridge door. I rinse them right away after using with boiling water, and they clean up easily. (Posted on February 28, 2014)

When I told my husband I wanted this type bottle for kefir water, he found one at a thrift store for me. After ordering a couple more on-line and telling him how much they cost, he was shocked! He paid twice that for a clear, used one! Other than the hinges being tight (which I imagine changes with use), these are excellent bottles at a great price. (Posted on February 26, 2014)

When I started making water kefir soda, I ordered two of these bottles. Then I bought two "similar" bottles at a local store. The Grolsch bottles make bubbly water kefir, but the store bought ones don't! My only regret is that I didn't order six of these right from the start! The top stays so tight that it is tough to open, but this is precisely why it works so well. To make it easier to flip, I wrap a towel or a piece of rubbery shelf liner over the top to help me get a good grip. (Posted on January 20, 2014)
