Make fermenting vegetables easier! This half-gallon-size glass jar includes an airlock setup which facilitates gas escaping your fermented vegetables while keeping air out. This allows you to make pickles, sauerkraut, and other fermented vegetables, fruits, condiments, and more while greatly reducing and often eliminating the threat of mold.

Kit Includes:

  • Glass jar
  • Plastic lid fitted with a rubber grommet (BPA-free)
  • Airlock
  • Large ceramic fermentation weight
  • Extra solid lid for storage after fermentation is complete

Container Measurements:

  • Jar Height: 6.3 inches (9.8 inches with airlock)
  • Jar Diameter: 5.5 inches
  • Mouth Diameter: 4.3 inches

Note that this lid size and thread pattern is not compatible with canning jar lids.

Due to manufacturer source differences, the shape of the jar in the actual product may vary from the picture.

Why I Love This Product

I've been a skeptic of the need for airlocks for some time now. It is possible to ferment vegetables safely without them, so long as you understand the process properly. So when I tried the fermented vegetable master, I did so with some cynicism. I have found that this piece of equipment, specifically the airlock lid, is very helpful when mold problems are highly probably for vegetable ferments. Specifically, when fermenting in high temperatures over 90°F, using an airlock is quite helpful in keeping the bad bacteria out while allowing the carbon dioxide to escape. While with a mason jar, you would have to burp the lids in order to release that gas, the airlock allows it to escape with no entry way for unfriendly microorganisms. In situations such as high heat this fermented vegetable master is quite useful. Shannon, CFH Content Writer

    • Should I have the top of the vegetables touch the airlock or do I need a few inches of space between the vegetables and the airlock?
    • The vegetables should be submerged and weighted and the vessel shouldn't be filled to more than 80% capacity.

    • Can you transfer the fermented vegetables to another glass container after the vegetables have fermented in Vegetable Master (so you can ferment other stuff)?
    • Yes, finished fermented vegetables can be transferred to another clean container for storage.
    • Do you find this question helpful?  Yes   No
  • From Lane at 1/24/13 11:05 AM
    • Since the lip of the jar has a smaller diameter than the rest of the jar, and the glass weights have to fit through that smaller diameter, do your glass weights keep all the vegetables submerged? Or do some of the vegetables come up on the side of the weights?
    • The Fermented Vegetable Master Half-Gallon comes with 3 glass weights. Unless your jar is over-packed, the 3 weights should be sufficient to spread out and keep the veggies submerged.

    • just got one and I put the correct amount of water in airlock but it is poring out and leaking over . why is that?
    • Check the headspace above your vegetable/brine mixture in the jar. You should have 1-2 inches headspace. The liquid in the jar can bubble up into the airlock, otherwise, and cause an overflow.

    • Do these containers contain any lead that can leach into products in the jar?

    • Hi. Do I still need to weight down the vegetables/sauerkraut if I use this jar?
    • The Fermented Vegetable Master comes with glass weights. The weights are helpful in keeping your fermenting veggies away from oxygen at the top of the jar.

    • Is this container suitable for fermenting water kefir?
    • Yes, this can ferment water kefir. However, you do not need to use the special air-lock lid for fermenting water kefir. You simply need a jar and a coffee filter or tight weave towel for the top.

I'm new to fermenting foods. I've used my half gallon jar with airlock twice now and had not problems at all. I asked the company questions and received very prompt replies. I like my jar so much that I'm going to purchase one as a gift for a brother's birthday. (Posted on April 21, 2014)

I found this product to be a great balance between initial cost to start fermenting as compared to purchasing a crock. I wanted a 3liter crock but the 100+ dollar price tag was hard to swallow. This product works.

I've made pickles, sauerkraut and am now making cauliflower and brocolli. (Posted on April 17, 2014)

Good alternative to a traditional fermenting crock. Great size for those with small households.

Just finished a batch of Turkish Pickled Cabbage from Linda Ziedrich's The Joy of Pickling. Between the glass weights and the airlock, this batch was a breeze.

These are great jars for making sauerkraut. I don't smell a thing during fermentation and haven't had one issue with mold in the 5 batches I've made using this jar! (Posted on April 8, 2014)
An outstanding value for a convenient way to go if you have a small quaintly, or need a faster job than large crocks offer. Review by Charles

I am new to fermenting foods, but am preparing for summer vegetables. We have three large crocks, 2.6, 3, 3.6 gallons, plus for fast small quantities, a half, and a one gallon jugs. The half gallon was used recently and the celery, jicama, and cauliflower turned out far more delicious than anticipated. It was close to the large pots in taste. I use half and one gallon jugs to store in one fridge used for that purpose. I shall try freezing a quart to test the quality of frozen fermented veggies unless advised against it for a valid reason. Thanks for a great idea. (Posted on April 5, 2014)

I was SO delighted to give this to my daughter and son-in-law. I sure was hoping that they would find a recipe that they'd really like enough to keep on using it - it can't do the good things it can do in your gut unless you eat it! So far it looks pretty good - and of course it helps enormously that the actual process is made easy and foolproof

I am currently making my second batch of kimchi. I have been interested in fermenting for awhile, but the crocks with weights are too expensive and I also didn't like the idea of the mold on top and all that. The air lock system takes care of that problem and the price for this system is right. I left my first batch on the counter for 5 days and it was fun to watch the liquid level go up and down. The resulting product was absolutely delicious and we've been eating kimchi fried rice several times a week! I can't wait until I have fresh veggies to use this summer. (Posted on January 30, 2014)

This makes fermenting nearly foolproof, even for a beginner. Everything I've made in it has turned out great, no mold, slime, no problems. And it's so much less expensive than any of the other fermentation crocks I've looked at. (Plus, the mad chemist in me loves getting to watch the fermentation process as it progresses.) I have my first batch of sauerkraut in my jar right now. It was soooo easy to use and I love the recipes that came with it. The hardest part was working the water out of the cabbage. Then I just filled up the jar and closed it up with the little air lock on top and put in the pantry with the date taped to it. Looking forward to trying it out! I love not having to worry about mold or anything getting in there. (Posted on November 13, 2013)

I'm making my first cultured veggies ever, and it seems really easy. I followed the recipe for fermented salsa (plus a few extra chiles) because it's a food that my husband and I will eat fairly regularly so I won't have trouble using it up. After the 2-day ferment (recommended), it's quite pungent and we're looking forward to using it to make a Mexican dinner tomorrow night. This is a no-brainer contraption that truly makes fermenting quick and simple. My only wish is that the plastic airlock is more sturdy. I ordered an extra one because I'm afraid the part will eventually break with repeated use. Otherwise, I love this thing!!! (Posted on November 5, 2013)

My husband and I began making sauerkraut and kimchi a few months ago with two Half-Gallon Fermented Vegetable Masters. We'd never cultured anything before and were pretty nervous about it. The Vegetable Masters made it a no-brainer. Fill 'em up, put 'em in the pantry, wait. Eat! No mold, no slime, no stink, no babysitting. Just crunchy & delicious kraut and kimchi. I'm back on the site to order more equipment. I do think the price is a somewhat steep for a glass jar & plastic airlock, but I'm willing to pay for the ease of use and peace of mind. Recommended.
