Healthy Yogurt

Making homemade healthy yogurt is not only economical, it's also easy!  Click here to view our six varieties of natural yogurt starter cultures.

Make healthy yogurt using the highest quality of milk:

  • Choose the least processed and most local milk possible.  Avoid ultra-pasteurized (aka UHT ultra-high temp) milk or milk that has traveled long distances (preparation for long distance travel requires additional processing).
  • Choose organic milk whenever possible.  Organic milk allows you to avoid the common practice of giving cows routine antibiotics and hormones.  It also ensures that that cows were not fed pesticide laden feed.

Make healthy yogurt using a traditional yogurt starter culture:

  • Historically yogurt was made by using a small amount of yogurt from each batch as a starter culture for the next batch (a process similar to traditional sourdough).  Our grandmothers made healthy yogurt using this process with yogurt they obtained from their own mothers, friends, etc.  Modern yogurt making normally involves using a yogurt starter that was manufactured in a laboratory but traditional yogurt starter cultures are still available!  Click here for more information.

Make healthy yogurt without chemical additives or stabilizers:

  • Many yogurt brands now includes chemical additives and stabilizers as thickening agents.  Natural yogurt requires fat to be thick and creamy so using whole milk will yield thicker healthy yogurt than will low fat milk.

Make healthy yogurt without refined sugar or artificial ingredients:

  • Many yogurt brands use high fructose corn syrup to sweeten the yogurt while a few brands do still use sugar (albeit refined sugar).  The sugar-free varieties of yogurt are generally sweetened with artificial sweeteners.
  • Flavoring yogurt with fruit and honey (especially raw honey) produces the wonderful tasting yogurt while avoiding the refined sugar and artificial ingredients.
